Carmen walked down the dark streets. She was a bit stressed so she had decided to take a walk. She reflected on how things had been for her. She was married to a beautiful Spanish woman. She had long dark brown hair that flowed about her face beautifully and provided a perfect contrast with her big emerald green eyes. Carmen thought of how soft her cinnamon skin was and what a wonderful mother she had been. Noelani was her name and its very sound made her sigh. She had two beautiful children of which she loved very much. She had a little boy by the name of Cylus. He was only nine years old with straight light brown hair. He had caramel eyes and freckles spread across his nose. He looked more like her than he did Noelani, but she did carry him so it was only to be expected. Her daughter had Noelani’s green eyes. Little Aleshanee was only six years old and somehow wound up with strawberry blonde hair. Carmen would often indulge herself by tickling her daughter just to hear her laugh. She had a good home life.

“You are always welcome at our home.” Carmen remembered the words her mother had told her when she moved into her own house. She lived in a big house up in Sandia Heights. It didn’t originally belong to her but seeing as how she needed a house, Carmen’s family decided that the deed should go to her instead of it being for the entire family. Of course, they were always welcome to come and live with her whenever they felt like it. A few years back, her father found himself a house and decided to finally move out as well. Although he did not mind living with his ex-wife and her husband, he just felt that he had to move on as well. The days came when both little Xmu and Casilda moved out as well. They had decided to start their own lives and fall in love themselves. Now, her mother and stepfather lived in her childhood home by themselves. She would visit them often to make sure that they never felt alone. Carmen’s family was her prized possession and she took every step to make sure that it never fell apart.

It almost did though, thirteen years ago. Carmen smiled sadly as she thought of her last family member. The one that lived far away and was shrouded in mystery. Cruzi was the unique one of the family. She had been born part furry and she had a small pair of silvery wings, claws and unusually long canines. She was also telepathic. She was born after Carmen making her the second eldest of the Martinez daughters. But, despite all that she was born with, it wasn’t what made her so unique. Cruzi, did not live in New Mexico anymore. Carmen occupied her old house and contrary to popular belief, Cruzi had not died in a jet accident on her way to see Senator Skye, or rather President Skye, as her title now read. Cruzi was very much alive, but this was only known by her immediate family. Not even Carmen’s wife Noelani knew of the life Cruzi lived. Carmen felt her eyes beginning to water at the thought of her younger sister.

Twenty-two years ago, a serial killer by the name of Jeff, had broken into Carmen’s childhood home. He nearly killed Cruzi, but because she used her wits, Cruzi survived and conquered the serial killer. Cruzi had the annoying characteristic of forgiving easily and instead of turning in her attacker, she helped clean the wounds she had caused to him. After that, he fell in love with her and she did as well. Unfortunately, he had to leave her to keep himself from being caught by police. Devastated and heartbroken, Cruzi went on to be an accomplished poet and an ideal student. Things seemed great for Cruzi except that she carried the burden of loneliness. That was until fifteen years ago when they met by a chance encounter. They immediately recalled all their past feelings and were soon married.

Now, she lived with him in some sort of other world where other creatures and monsters from tales told around the campfire roamed and lived. Those creatures would leave nightly to do the work which had gotten them into our nightmares in the first place. Cruzi lived among them and they all loved her. She was happy, yet no one could know that she existed. The only exception was her family of which she made a deal that she would continue to visit should they swear to keep her a secret. Cruzi too, placed family above all else but she had to protect her new family, her husband. She would have severed contact with us to protect him had they not agreed. But, they did agree and now she regularly pops in to say hello. Just last week, she popped in for dinner at her childhood home. Everybody had gathered to see her. She would laugh and talk about how much she hated rapists, animal and child abusers, people in the child sex trade, etc. Yes, it seemed as if she wanted to rid the world of such people. Something that was very strange about her though, is that she never seemed to age. While Carmen had begun to show signs of age, Cruzi remained as full of life as ever. He eyes never seemed to loose that young sparkle. She was always smiling too.
