Chapter 4: Night and Day

        Eventually I was able to fall asleep but my rest wouldn’t last for long. I was taken away from sleep when a knock came on my door. It was very early in the morning so I decided to ignore it, hoping whoever it was would let me sleep. My hopes were shattered when a second knock came this time a little louder. I snuggled deeper into Jeff’s arms and closed my eyes. Three loud consecutive bangs sounded on the door causing both Jeff and I to sit up. “Open the damned door! Why did you lock it?!” came an irritated voice. “What the hell could you want at this hour?! It’s my room, I’m pretty sure that gives me license to lock it!” I yelled back. “You have responsibilities and right now you need to prepare breakfast! Stop being a selfish little dumb shit and wake up!” retorted Carmen. I got up and went to the door but I didn’t open it. “Carmen, I’m really tired! Can you please just make breakfast yourself this morning? Or maybe you can pick something up, just please let me sleep! And would it kill you to maybe say, oh I don’t know, PLEASE?!” I begged. “I don’t care! All I know is that there are hungry people and it was your responsibility to make food” she said curtly. I was about to continue the argument when Jeff put an arm up and stopped my speech. He pressed himself close to the door and spoke quietly but just enough to be heard. “I would really appreciate it if you left Cruzi alone! She has had a really bad night and needs sleep! Could you please go away!” he said dangerously. I stared at him in disbelief and apparently my sister was just as shocked because there was a long pause at the door. “He came over last night after you were asleep” I finally said followed by another silence. “Can I please come in?” came a much gentler Carmen. I opened the door and Carmen came in.

                The air was thick and awkward and I was just begging for someone to break the silence. “Did you know that Cruzi fell from the sky and hurt herself? She also had to walk home in the pouring rain. She could have easily gotten sick” Jeff snarled giving Carmen the evil eye. She cast her eyes downward and started fidgeting nervously. “I bet you didn’t even think to make sure she was alright before you went to sleep?” he asked. “No, I didn’t. I was busy with my own stuff” she mumbled never meeting with his eyes. Jeff was about to yell at her when I held up my hand and gave Jeff the back off look. “I wasn’t hurt that badly. Just a scrape on my back that’s all” I assured. I didn’t like her walking all over me but I was too tired to get into any kind of heated argument. “Let me see” she said. I turned around and she lifted my shirt gently running her fingers over the scrape. She then pulled me into an embrace. I was so shocked that I let out a small squeak. “I’m sorry I didn’t check to make sure you were ok but I was busy with Thurby” she said trying to defend herself. “That’s no excuse. As the eldest, it’s your responsibility to make sure the rest of us are fine” I mumbled. This was an awkward hug, but nonetheless it was a hug and she seemed genuinely sorry. After a short while Carmen let me go. “Go back to sleep Cruzi. Thurby and I will manage on our own. I’ll explain the situation when we return from the store. Oh, and we’re taking the little ones with us.” I was thankful for the extra sleep and crawled back into bed. I was so tired I didn’t even put the blanket on. Jeff came up and did it for me before snuggling up close to me. I lazily put my hand on his face, gently rubbing his cheek. “You shouldn’t be so hard on her” I told him. He just made a face before putting a hand to my mouth to prevent me from talking anymore. My vision soon blurred and I fell asleep.

                  I was awakened by a hand gently rubbing my face. I opened my eyes to see Jeff looking at me lovingly. “Someone wants to speak to you” he said slightly irritated. I checked the time and it read 2:30 pm. I figured it was about time I wake up and get something done. I sat up and saw that Carmen was back in the room with a timid smile on her face. “Can I help you?” I asked. “Thurby and I had planned to go camping with the little ones while Mommy, Daddy and Manuel are gone. We’ll be gone for Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. We should be back on Thursday. You’re going to be alone in the house, well I suppose not really alone” she said looking at Jeff. I felt bitter inside and it plainly showed on my face. “I suppose I wasn’t invited” I asked bitterly. She shifted uncomfortably. “No, but you’re going to have all this alone time with your boyfriend” she replied with a cheesy smile. “You know, it takes a long time to plan a camping trip. If Jeff had not showed up, I get the feeling that I would still be alone in the house. I don’t think you planned to invite me anyway” I growled. Her silence only confirmed what I had said. “Anyway, it’s not that I don’t trust you Cruzi, but since the two of you will be alone for all this time, I want to play things safe” she said motioning for me to come near her. I got up and she pulled out a little brown, band aid like sticker from the Walmart bag and stuck it where my hip bone and thigh meet. I eyed it suspiciously and asked “What’s with the little square band aid.” “It’s not a band aid Cruzi, it’s a birth control patch” she stated. My eyes widened and a deep red spread across my cheeks. “Wh-what do you think I-I’ll be doing” I stammered. Jeff was laughing at my flustered response. “I don’t know Cruzi, and that’s why I’m giving you this just in case something spur of the moment happens. Oh, this is for you too” she informed while holding up a Walmart bag. I looked inside to see a bunch of sweetly scented candles and other questionable items. I groaned and my stomach had butterflies from the embarrassment.
