(A.N Still no imagination on the chapter names XD )

I jerked back blinded momentarily by the flash.

"What the heck mom?!" I hissed, trying to rub the after image out of my eyes.

"Honey, this is a chance for us to be important and-"

I tuned out my mothers incessant babbling out and stalked out of the room, but not before spitting a venomous "NO" her way. As I grabbed my things from my room, Grey appeared, almost materializing out of thin air.

"Maggie?" That was all it took for my temper to cool. I turned to him and knelt down. I gazed at his baby face, a sure sign that he was healthy. For now.He was fast approaching 13 and Aspen and I tried to keep him as shielded as possible. Shield him from the way some kids were forced into harsh labor, only earning half pence for 2 hours work. If the child was educated or talented they could earn an apprenticeship. My brother and I taught Grey during the precious little free time we ever had. We had made a pact to do this, after realizing we had lost so much of our childhood.

"C'mon birch." I don't know if he heard all the things I was trying not to say. My regret, my sorrow- everything was becoming an organized mess.

I stood up and as we walked down the path from the house I heard my mother," Mahogany, please just think about it!" I paused, thinking how that, I had 1 chance in well over a thousand.

How that, if I entered and won, I would secure a future for my baby brother. My family wouldn't have to go some winter nights with no food, just to have heat.

"Is mom talking about the competition?" I nodded.

"I was reading a history book and it said the Princess and Queen can change some aspects of society." I glanced down in shock at Grey.

"You can't be serious."

"No, apparently Queen Sabrina made the three tiers law 100 years ago," he paused, face scrunched up with thought, " Though I think that either the Prince or King have to approve it now."

"Grey, you go on, I - uh, forgot something."

I made a mad dash for the house.

I stuck my head in the door, "Hey mom, about the competition?"
