A beep made me blink opening my eyes and I saw my mom holding the box open and her finger pressed down on the red button. I jumped up taking it from her hand, “MOM!” I yelled panicked, “Why would you do that! Did you want me to die?!” I screamed at her and my dad came in as she began to cry.
I ran to the bathroom and flushed the box down the toilet. My dad holding my mom looking confused and half asleep, “What happened?”
I glared at my so called mother, the one that who is supposed to protect me, “She pretty much signed my death certificate.” I spat at her.
She covered her face and hid her face against my father’s chest. I turned on the lights and grabbed the envelope finding another note at the bottom.
When or if you press the button, we will be there in an hour. You won’t need anything.
I clenched my hands, I had one hour to get away… one hour to run. I headed to the door, “Rain, wait.” My dad ordered and I stopped glancing at him.
“What.” I growled in anger.
He stood up holding my mom who still sobbed in his chest, “Go to my study, I will see you there shortly.” He ordered walking past me.
I wanted to run out of the room but I obeyed him. I sat in his study; my dad was a hard working business man and was in here almost all the time. I never came in here because I never had a reason too.
He came in a minute later and locked the door. He ran a hand down his face, “I never wanted you or your mother to know about this…” he muttered aloud. He walked to a picture of our family on the wall and took it off showing a safe. He pushed his thumb against it and then a code and the door opened.
I tilted my head curious, my dad was an open man, and he never had any secrets… till now…
He sighed softly and turned to me holding a DVD. I burrowed my eyes confused and he just walked to his laptop and turned it on.
“Before I show you this DVD I want you to know that I never wanted this life for you.” He said softly and slid the DVD in the disk area.
The computer screen was black for a second before it turned on.
It showed my dad smiling and he was talking, “Just keep it on me ok?” he yelled to the guy holding the camera he shouted back with an ‘ok’. My dad looked about 23 in the video and was grinning like an idiot.
He crouched then with speed, that I had only known one person to have, ran up a tree and ran across the tree tops. He was laughing so hard and back flipped landing easily and got up. He turned to a tree and took a breath then closed his hands and punched the tree. I watched amazed as the 4 foot wide tree cracked then fell over. My dad in the video laughed and jogged over and the video was turned off.
I looked up at him, “We have the same abilities?” I asked quietly.
He sighed putting the DVD back in his safe.
“Yes… it is a family trait that usually passes on to the males, that is why I didn't have to worry about you… but I guess it changed a bit.” He spoke softly closing the safe putting the picture back.
I looked down at my hands, “So you are saying, that I'm not only fast but strong too?” I looked up in excitement but stopped when I saw my dad leaning against the wall looking sad.
I frowned and he sighed softly before he spoke, “I was recruited to the government when I turned 25. They had me fight and I have done stuff I wish stayed buried… your mom was pregnant with you when this happened, I didn't have a good job and she had medical bills… I only did it because of the money.” He looked up and I saw the sorrow written across his face.
