Danny looked back at Christopher who was sleeping in the backseat of her old beat up Volvo. She knew he was tired from all the packing they had been doing lately. He also kept waking up at night saying he was having bad dreams. She didn't blame him she had been having them too since their parents passed.
Danny pulled into a gas station to get gas and some coffee. As soon as the car stopped Christopher was wide awake, almost like he hadn't been sleeping in the first place. "Where are we?" he asked his voice cracking. She smiled at him and said " Almost there". She knew if she would have said what town he just would have asked how far anyway.
"Are you hungry?" Danny asked. He nodded, tired all over again. "Alright come in and go use the bathroom while I get us something to eat, ok?" He nodded again unbuckling his seatbelt. They both got out of the car and Christopher leaned on her side as they were walking into the gas station.
When they got back to the car Danny handed him a sandwich from the deli part of the gas station and some Cheez-Its. Thirty minutes down the road the car came to a chugging stop. "No no no!" Danny yelled. Christopher looked at her In the mirror. "What happened?" he asked softly. "I forgot to pump the gas at the gas station." They sat there quietly for a few moments. "Well what are we gonna do?" Christopher asked yawning.
She thought for a minute "There is an auto-parts store not too far from here." she said "We can walk down there, hopefully they have some gas." Christopher whined and argued about how tired he was. "We have to." Danny said simply "If we are going to be to L.A. by morning we have to get moving."
It wasn't as far as she thought it would be, but she had to carry Christopher on her back half the way so he would stop whining. When they got to the auto-parts store Danny was relieved to see it still open. She walked in with her brother on her back and a frown on her face. "Can I help you" said the man at the counter, smiling. "Yea a ran out of gas not to far that way." she said pointing in the direction she had just come from.
He walked over to the garage door "Well I can fix that, no problem." he said reaching for a gas container. he filled it to the top and threw it in the back of a truck. "How much is it going to be." asked Danny. He smiled at her "Don't worry about it, it's on me." he said opening his truck door. "That's really nice of you, thanks." she said still frowning.
They all got in the truck and drove back to her car. They all got out and Danny started to poor the gas in the tank. The man got in to the front seat to make sure the car started. Christopher was already in the back sleeping again. "So where are you headed to?" he asked, making Danny jump. "We are going to L.A." she answered, trying to smile. "Alright well if you ever need some gas" he said laughing "my name's Will." She smiled " I'm Danny. Thanks again for the gas, and the ride." Will looked through the window at Christopher then back to Danny "No problem." he said "have a good rest of your night, Danny." he smiled and walked back to his truck.
Danny slid in to the driver's seat of her car and layed her head back on the seat and sighed. She looked down in the cup holder and found a piece of paper. She picked it up and opened it. It had will's name and number on it. She laughed started her car, pulled away and threw the piece of paper out the window.
She didn't have time for anyone but herself and Christopher anymore. She was ready to start her new life in a new city with new people, and she was determined to let nothing stop her.
