Chapter 7 - Searching for Company

One of the things I had noticed since moving here, is that Christopher is clearly bored. Lonely even.

And being the wonderful sister I am, I decided to get him a dog.

I had thought about it for a real long time, I mean really long, considering the no job and just moving here...and my poor poor furniture.

But if Christopher needed a friend then I would get him the best one I could find.
The only problem was where was the best place to get an amazing dog for him?
So I did the only thing I could think of and I called Jack.

"Hello"

"Hey Jack, it's Danny"

"Oh hey Danny! What's up?"

"Do you know where there's a shelter around here?"

"Like for animals?"

"Uhhh yes?" I laugh

"Well then I will be over in ten"
The line clicked before I could even answer him.
Christopher came marching in to the living room with a box on his head.
It had eye holes and strange window things in the side.

"What's up bud?"

"Looking for parts for a spaceship" he replies casually

"Ooooooh fun fun" I look down and start reading my book on the coffee table.

Sure enough exactly ten minutes later there was a knock on the door. I didn't get up in time before Jack just strolled in anyway. Well he's getting comfortable I scoff to myself jokingly.

"You ready?" He asks looking my way

"For what?"

"To go to the shelter Danny" he laughs heading for the door.

We had made plans to drop Christopher off with Jack's mom so it could be a surprise.

On the way to the shelter we passed through an area with trash and junk all over the road. There were buildings falling apart and run down gas stations, gosh was I glad we didn't move to this part of town.

Pulling into the shelter I noticed a bunch of fences in the back where I'm assuming they let the dogs outside.
it made me feel bad coming in to see all these dogs and coming out with only one.

  Opening the door was like breaking through a soundproof wall with a ton of noise trapped inside begging to be let out.

Yapping, barking, howling you name it, it was all there in one tiny building.
I had never been very fond of shelters, they were so crowded and all the animals looked sad all the time. Although those terrible commercials don't help anything.

   We walked to the back and I looked to my right to see an old bulldog sitting in the corner whining, he was white with brown spots. I went up to the cage but he just whimpered and tried to cower deeper into the corner.

Moving on there was a younger healthy looking German Shepard , she was beautiful and I immediately thought this was the one for Christopher.

Getting closer to the cage I immediately chose differently when she started to growl and nip at the bars.

   "Geez don't get too close to those cages." Jack says cautiously.

  I nod to acknowledge him walking forward, there was a grey pit bull to the left wagging her tail and licking the bars of the cage to the left.

  I had heard so many stories about pit bulls, the "fighting breed". It was cruel in my opinion.

I had had a pit bull when I was little and she was amazing so I knew this would be perfect for him.

"This is the one" I say to Jack smiling at the dog before me.

"Alrighty let's go talk to the people up front"

We had dropped her off at the house before going back to get Christopher, I couldn't wait to the look on his face.

We walked through the door and we were greeted by slobber and Christopher screamed and jumped behind me. 

"It's ok bud, she's real sweet" I try soothing him

He comes back out from behind me and a huge smile spreads across his face.
"Is she for me?"

"I don't know, do you think you can handle her?" I ask smiling down at him

"YES YES YES!!" He yells jumping up and down

"Alright the I suppose we should probably get her a bed huh?"

"Can she sleep I my room with me?"

"We'll see"

"What are you going to call her Christopher?' Jack pipes in

A look of thought crosses Christopher's face but only for a split second.

"Holly" he smiles "her name is Holly."
