Her Dreams

Chapter 3 - Finally

      Danny looks out the window at the officer. "Good morning ma'ame" he says crouching down and looking in. "Morning officer, what seems to be the problem?" Danny asks nervously. "Your taillight is out" he says, smiling back at Christopher and waving. "Hey bud" he says. Christopher smiles widely "Hi!" He says with delight.

    "I had no idea" Danny said staring at him. "Ok well you need to get it fixed" he says coolly. She smiles "Yea I will" she says. "May I see your license and insurance please?" The officer asks. Danny digs through the glove box and pulls out all the information for her Volvo. Then she pulls her license out of her wallet.

  Danny can feel the officers eyes burning into the back of her head. She shifts uncomfortably then turns and hands him all her papers. He nods and walks off to his car with all her stuff. She let out a breath she didn't know she was holding. He walks back to the car and hands her back all her papers. He smiles and says "well you are good to go" Danny smiles "Thank you officer, have a nice day" she says before restarting her car. "Where are you two headed anyway?" He asks showing his curiosity. "L.A., we are moving there from Minnesota" she states. "Oh you aren't too far then" he says looking in front of her car.

  "Nope, it's really exciting" she says smiling from ear to ear. "Well huh I am off duty in like half an hour if you would like to go grab a coffee or something?" He asks smiling hope flashing in his eyes. At that moment a million things ran through Danny's mind. What should I say? That was the top question running through her mind.

  "Yea I would like that" she blurts out before realizing she had. "Alright well I'm Jack" he says extending his hand into the window. "Danny" she says shaking his hand twice before letting go. "I know" he says laughing. She was confused the realized he meant her license "Ohhh" she says laughing with him.

    "Alright well here" he says passing her his cell phone from his belt. Danny punches in her number and they agree to meet in half an hour at a coffee shop in the next town. Danny smiles pulling back onto the highway, "Oooooo" Christopher say smiling a toothy grin. "What?" Danny says laughing. "Is he your boyfriend?" Christopher asks very seriously now. "Nooooo" Danny is quick to respond.

They were silent til the car pulled into the coffee shop. Danny waits til she sees Jack get out of his car to get out of her own. She locks it just as Christopher grabs her hand. The walk up and meet Jack at the door and he opens it for them and smiles at Danny, Danny smiles back, nods and walks in.

    They sit at a little table by the window and order their coffees. Danny orders Christopher a hot chocolate instead. "I'm really glad you agreed to having coffee with me" Jack says looking at her and smiling. "Me too" she says too quick. She can feel heat creeping up her neck and she becomes aware that her cheeks are bright.

  She turns her head to look out the window, hoping he didn't notice. "Do you cat ha lot of bad guys?" Christopher asks Jack in awe. Jack laughs for a second and Christopher stares at him expectantly. "Yea I do." Jack starts "that's my job." Christopher smiles "That's what I want to do when I get big" Jack smiles at him, "Oh yea?" He says "that's what I wanted to do when I was your age too."

Danny chuckles and Jack smiles at her. They smile at each other for a minute, in a comfortable silence. The lady brings their drinks and sets Danny's in front of her. She's smiling down at Jack the whole time, but Jack doesn't seem to notice since he's too busy staring at Danny. Thanks he says not looking at her, the waitress's face drops and she stomps away angrily.

  "So what do you do for a living" Jack asks bringing Danny's attention back to him. "Well I haven't exactly gone to college...." Danny says shyly. "Oh how come?" He asks taking a drink of his coffee. "Well I wanted to go but when my parents passed away Christopher was put in my custody and I didn't really get a chance." She said looking down at the table.

   "What would you have gone for?" He asks keeping the subject. "I wanted to be an art teacher" she says smiling a little at her childish dream. "She can draw really good!" Says Christopher happily. "She draws me pictures a lot" he says sipping his hot chocolate. "Well I would love for you to show me sometime" Jack says smiling at Danny again.

About an hour later they say good bye and agree to meet again soon since he lives in L.A.
Danny smiles as her and Christopher drive down the road to their new home.
