Chapter five
"What took you so long?" whined Sacha as soon as I walked out of the school driveway. It was a pretty miserable day, the sky was grey and threatening to pour down any second.
"Sorry I got umm, caught up," I replied. After everything that had happened in Art Daniel and I had caught ourselves a ride to the principals office for the rest of the afternoon. Not exactly the kind of thing you want happening on your second day at a new school.
"Don't worry we already heard all about what happened," Ashleigh informed me.
"Wow new does travel fast around here," I muttered.
"Can we go already," whined Sacha. "I do want to get my belly button pierced today guys, before Christmas would be nice," Sacha added sarcastically.
"Come on then let's go already," said Ashleigh who had been texting someone through out our whole conversation. Probably some new boyfriend.
"Oh yeah guys I think i'm gonna pass, I'm not feeling to good," I lied.
"Oh come on! Don't tell me your not going because of what happened this afternoon," argued Ashleigh.
"It'll be fine," Ashleigh added. While Sacha stood there looking annoyed. Probably thinking about how she could have gotten her belly button pierced by now. Ashleigh sharply elbowed Sacha in the ribs obviously trying to get her to help persuade me to go.
"Ouch!" Sacha cried as she glared at her. "Are you going to come or not?" Sacha asked impatiently.
"She's coming," Ashleigh answered for me as the pretty blonde dragged me away.
"I guess i'm going then," I muttered sarcastically.
An hour later we had a happily pierced Sacha and our arms were filled with shopping bags that the girls had convinced me to buy. I had just wasted my months savings but it felt good to finally have friends again who treated me like everyone else. After my gran died a couple months ago all my friends treated me differently. They didn't know how to act around me any more. They were always giving me sympathetic looks and telling me everything would be alright. You could tell they didn't really care and they just wanted me to get over it. But i couldn't and i wouldn't. My Gran was always there for me and I told her everything. My parents were always busy so my gran was like a mum to me. And when she died my mum tried to hide her pain but ended up ditching my dad and I because she didn't want to have to be reminded of her. Well that's what i say, to hide my pain i guess. A year later dad met Briana and 6 months later here we are today. Dad tried to step up and be the big protective family man but you can tell it's all an act. I just don't see why people can't just be themselves. Why do they all have to change and try to be something they're not?
"Earth to Sydney," I was stopped short of my trace of thought as I gave Ashleigh a blank look and realised she was talking to me.
"Oh, uhh sorry, what did you say?"
"She asked if you think you suit this dress," Sacha interrupted.
"Oh um yea looks great," I mumbled. To be honest I really don't know much about fashion so what i said was totally fake, just like them.
"I'm thinking of getting it for the end of year prom," exclaimed Sacha. In my opinion it seemed like ages in advance to buy a dress for a dance that wasn't until the end of the year. Well I guess it's only a term away since i started here in the middle of the year.
After Sacha had paid for the dress with what looked to be her parent's credit card, we did a bit more window shopping before stopping to get a drink at Starbucks. Once we had ordered our drinks we sat down at a small round table by the window.
"So what's going on with you and Daniel?" I let out a small laugh,
"Nothing," I reassured Sacha as i took a sip of my coffee.
"Seemed like a little more then nothing this afternoon..." muttered Ashleigh under her breath.
"It was nothing, he is nothing, he's just a know-it-all, self centered guy," I replied
"Say what you want but we all know it's true," said Ashleigh sighing.
"Where's Taylor?" I asked desperate to change the subject.
"She's at tumble practise," Sacha replied. My mind was buzzing as I tried to think straight.
"For cheer?" i stuttered.
"No, she's a gymnast," added Ashleigh.
"Are you OK? you look really pale," asked Sacha generally concerned.
"Uhhhhh...." I stuttered lost for words. There was a pounding in the back of my head as i swallowed a huge lump in the back of my throat. All my senses were screaming at me to run. But all my muscles were frozen. My brain was whizzing, bringing back that bad memory of that dreaded day. I forced it out of my mind trying not to think of it. But it all came rushing back in to fast, before the world disappeared around me.
