All I could feel was my eye lids fluttering open, nothing else. My whole body felt paralyzed. I looked around to see I wasn’t in the car with Aaron anymore. I was in a hospital. My mom and dad were sleeping in the chairs beside my hospital bed. “Mom? Dad?” I said, loud enough to wake them. My mom’s eyes opened wide and she rushed over to my side. “Oh Ashley.” Tears were falling down her face. “Scott wake up!” She was now over by my dad’s side shaking him. He awoke and came over to my side to. “How do you feel Ashley?” He asked. “I’m okay.” I said. “What’s going on?” I asked. The last thing I could remember was being at an intersection with Aaron. Where was Aaron? “I’ll go get the nurse.” My dad said to my mom. My mom nodded and my dad left the room. “What happened?” I asked again. “Where’s Aaron?” I asked. I had a million questions, but those two meant the most to me. “What do you remember last?” My mom said, quietly, almost in a whisper. “What happened?” I yelled. I was starting to get angry. Why couldn’t she just tell me? She sighed. “You were in a car accident. You and Aaron.” “Where’s Aaron?” I asked as my dad came back into the room with a nurse. “Hey sleeping beauty.” She said to me. “How are you feeling?” I could already tell I was going to hate this. “I’m okay.” I said. He did some tests on me then told me the doctor would be in soon. “Where’s Aaron?” I asked before she had the chance to leave the room. “Your friend isn’t as lucky as you Ms. Johnson. He’s in a coma.” She looked to my parents to me and then left the room. Her words hit me like a ton of bricks. No. It couldn’t be, I had to be dreaming. Yet I couldn’t help but control my tears, first there was only a couple streaming down my face but it soon led to me sobbing. My parents both came around and hugged me. I didn’t care about anything else besides if Aaron was going to be okay.
“Mom I don’t want to go to school. I just want to go to the hospital and be with Aaron.” I said as a she handed me some toast for breakfast. “Ashley as soon as you get home from school you can go to the hospital but the doctors said its okay for you to go back to school and I don’t want you missing anything else.” I rolled my eyes. It had been two weeks since the accident and Aaron still hadn’t woken up yet. The doctors said I should stay home for two weeks then I’d be ok to resume regular activities, which meant school. I was not looking forward to school. I didn’t want to deal with the questions and stares and I sure as hell didn’t want to face school without Aaron. He was the reason I loved school. A honk came from outside. “Bye.” I said blandly picking up my purse and heading for the door. “Ashley, don’t be so miserable.” She called out as I was just closing the door. “Hey Ashley.” Sara said as I got into the car. I didn’t say anything, I didn’t want to talk, and I didn’t want to do anything. She was my best friend she could see right away that I didn’t want to talk and just drove off.
Walking into school was the worst part. It was just like those cheesy reality movies where you walk in and all eyes turn to you. That’s exactly how it happened. I walked into the front doors and every conversation stopped and everyone had their eyes on me. My first class was biology and when I said down everyone just stared at me. “Everyone eye’s here please.” Mr. Blandford had to say to get everyone’s attention. It was now 4th period, the period right after lunch and the stares still didn’t stop. Suddenly a hand wrapped around my arm and led me around the corner to a stop where nobody was. I looked up to see a guy I had never seen before, but he truly was beautiful. He had brown tousled hair and the most beautiful blue eyes I have ever seen. “Sorry, I just thought I would help you get out of there.” I couldn’t keep my eyes off of him. When I realized I was staring I finally spoke up. “Um yeah thank you. I’m Ashley.” He smiled. “I know who you are. I’m Ty.” I nodded. “I’m really sorry to hear about the accident.” He said carefully, clearly not knowing if it was a touchy subject or not. It was. Tears started falling down my face. “Don’t cry.” He said. He stepped forward and wiped my tears away with his soft but muscular hands. A chill ran up my spine when he did that. “It’s just really hard to deal with and I just really need someone right now.” I said tears still falling down my cheeks. He pulled me into a hug. “Is there anything I can do?” He asked. For a second I almost said no, but I realized I did need something. “Actually, there is something.”
“Which room is he in?” Ty asked as we walking through one of the hospitals hallways. “205.” I said looking at each room searching for the number. I asked Ty to come with me to visit Austin after school because my mom had some event at work, my dad was working and Sara was working. I didn’t want to come by myself either. “Thank you for coming by the way.” I said still looking for his room. “Anything to help.” He said, searching for the room too. When we reached the room, Ty peeked inside first to see if anyone was in there. He gave me the okay to go in because there wasn’t anyone in there. When I saw Aaron lying in the bed motionless I started to sob. Seeing him so fragile and helpless just struck something in me. Ty came over and gave me another hug. “Shh. It’ll be okay.” He said, rubbing my back in a soothing manner.
“I’ll go get us some dinner.” Ty said getting up. “What would you like?” I thought for a few seconds. “Pizza.” He nodded then left the room. We had been here for a couple hours and it was now dinner time. While Ty was gone I took the opportunity to talk to Aaron. I took his fragile hand in mine. “Please wake up.” I whispered. I tear forming in my eye. “Please.” I whispered again. I put my head down and continued to hold his hand. His hand twitched and I looked up. He wasn’t awake but at least he was getting a little bit of motion. I started to cry happy tears.
“Thank you so much for coming with me. I really didn’t want to come alone.” I said to Ty as we left the hospital. “No problem Ashley. If you ever need me just call.” He gave me his number then gave me a hug. He leaned in and gave me a peck on the lips but I pushed him away. “Ty.” I started. “I’m sorry that was stupid of me.” He said. “Don’t’ apologize.” I said. He gave me a hug and began heading towards his car. As much as I was attracted to Ty I had a boyfriend. Even though he wasn’t awake I couldn’t do that to him. He deserved more than that. Though that didn’t stop me from thinking about Ty’s kiss all night long.
