I officially hated Miss Brooks. She was irresponsible, dumb, mean, and just plain cruel for pairing me with Max. Many teachers have tried and failed to settle the feud between us. If Miss Brooks thought she was going to be the successful one, she was in way over her head. The requirement sheet was so vague and useless, I basically created my own. I had spoken to Miss Brooks about using mine, and she had said, and I quote, "I don't know, I don't care, just turn something in that you think could get a first place ribbon." So I was following my own set of rules. And I was going to show Max what I thought we should do tonight. Or tomorrow. Or whenever I felt like not getting my head ripped off.
I pushed around the mashed potatoes on my plate, not feeling especially hungry. My mother and father spoke about their day as they munched on their dinner, and I nodded and added a few "uh-huh"s and "yeah"s when the timing was appropriate.
Then my mom put down her fork and looked at me with her eyebrows furrowed. "Is everything okay, Greyson?"
I looked up from my plate. "What? Yeah, why wouldn't everything be okay?"
"When I asked if you were excited about dinner with the Callers tomorrow you said yeah," she explained, crossing her arms.
"Oh, I wasn't really paying attention," I admitted sheepishly.
"Yeah, I noticed. Is everything okay?" she repeated.
I nodded vigorously. "Yeah, yeah, everything is great."
She picked up on the lie easily. "Are you sure? Is it something at school?"
"No, nothing, everything's fine." I felt compelled to keep it a secret. I didn't want my mom to end up calling the school and complaining about our new teacher.
"I heard you have a new teacher at school," Mom said, looking at me pointedly.
I avoided her eyes. "Yeah? Where'd you hear that?"
"Mrs. Callers told me. She volunteers for the PTSA." The PTSA is the Parent, Teacher, Student Association. It's basically what keeps the school running. Without it, there would be no dances, no fairs, no events, and no pizza parties. Those were always my favorite. Free pizza. Yay.
"Is she any good?" I asked, attempting to sound casual.
"Greyson." Mom sounded exasperated. "I know you have her as your new Creative Writing teacher. Drop the act, fool."
"I don't know what you're talking about," I said slowly, making some weird faces that I thought would look convincing. Mom reached over and politely slapped my cheek. If that can be described as polite. It was basically a tap, but it said Mom meant business.
My shoulders sagged. "Okay, yes, I have her as a new teacher. So what?"
"So what? So tell me about her. Is she nice? Is she a good teacher? Does she have good plans for Romance Semester?"
"Yes," I lied.
"Are you lying?"
"Yes."
"Is she a good teacher?"
"Yes." I grinned cheekily.
"Fool, don't try to be cute."
I shook my head at her. "Momma, just 'cause you fool, doesn't make you any cooler than you ever thought you were."
