I guess they're trying to be unique in each killing. Ugh. I shiver at the thought. At least my mark is safe, whoever they are.
"Get to the hospital," I urge him. "No one will kill you but Hester. They'll try to capture you though, so take this." I hand him my gun.
"Thanks, Raven," he says.
"Oh, I'm not Raven," I tell him. "She was killed last week. I'm her twin." His eyes bulge out of his head.
"Now hurry," I tell him. He takes the gun and scampers off. I hope he makes it.
"Why'd you give him your gun?" Lance asks, leading me down another hallway.
"Because there's a bulge under your shirt." Lance gives me a dirty look, but hands me the extra weapon. I grin. He painted flames on it.
"Where now?" I inquire. Lance shrugs. We've passed a few more bodies. More people seem to have fled. Thank goodness.
"We need to find President Crest," Lance replies, bending down to take the pulse of a girl on the floor. He suddenly hoists her.
"She's alive," he informs me. "We're taking her."
I roll my eyes. "Look, I don't want her to die..." I begin.
"So help me," he snaps. The more carnage he's seen, the more pissed he is. I'll bet, well, whatever hasn't been trashed, that he's mad at himself. Just like Shain and me, he sees that this could have been prevented if the Vice President and he hadn't hatched their little double agent plan. Forget keeping your cover, have President Crest remove Brace from office. That might not stop everything, but it might've saved lives.
Hesitantly, I hoist her legs. Together we shuffle down the hall. Where are the school nurses? They should be here, helping people. That's their actual job description.
By the time Lance and I manage to find the infirmary, my muscles feel ready to give out. The girl isn't that big, but she's bony and heavy. Deduction: she's difficult to carry.
One nurse, an auburn haired woman named Ulivia, is still here. She looks horrorstruck when she sees the girl in Lance and my arms.
"Oh goodness!" she exclaims in her high-pitched voice. "Quickly, onto the table."
I set the girl down with a little my force than necessary.
"I'm surprised you two are still alive," Ulivia says, checking the girl's pulse.
"I already did that," Lance tells her.
Ulivia replies, "Someone can die in five minutes without proper treatment. I had to check; it's procedure and has saved lives." I raise an eyebrow. She blushes. "Not in this school, but in the actual hospital."
Her mentioning of the hospital makes me think of Will and Shain. I hope they're okay. They've got to be okay.
"Just take care of her," Lance snaps. "We've got business to take care of."
He and I burst out of the infirmary...and right into a trap.
