The first-morning chill brushes against my cheeks when I walk outside my home. My breath freezes the instant it leaves my mouth. It is a sign that winter is coming but I don't mind. It is always the best excuse for hot chocolate and cozying up by the fireplace. Maybe I can do that with Aria when I get home after school today.
"Come on, Sadie, we are going to be late!" I heard my kid sister Aria call out from the car. I was so focused on seeing my breath in the air, that I got distracted.
"Coming!" I called after Aria and rushed to the car so our mom could drive us to school. The heat blasted me as I got in the car. Aria already took shotgun but she got there first anyway.
Aria snarkily turns around to pout at me, "Took you long enough. If I am late for choir it is all your fault you know. You act like you haven't seen your breath freeze up before."
"Sorry, I just didn't expect it to be this cold today. Perfect weather for hot cocoa if you are down for that later that is." I replied as I put my seat belt on. Looking back at her I can see she really couldn't contain her pout any longer. I guess I got her at the hot cocoa part. Though I knew she would fold for that anyway. Aria loves food.
"I guess I can work with that." Aria tried to contain her smile before turning back into her seat. Soon we were on the 30-minute ride to school.
My name is Sadie Rodgers, age 16, and a junior in high school. I go to a decently big high school along with my 14-year-old sister Aria. Now we are in the middle of the term and winter is coming up. Aria and I have music lessons that we attend early in the morning before classes. It is the same routine: music lessons, classes, lunch, more classes, then I go home to do homework, shower, go to bed, then repeat. The monotony of it all can be very boring sometimes. Though I don't have much to break it up somehow. I wish...
"Honey, we are here." I heard my mom call for me. Taken out of my train of thought, I look up to see the school I have been attending since freshman year. One would think that by now I would have some friends to look forward to when I go to school. Alas, I don't however. I haven't found myself connecting with many people. I think I have more acquaintances if anything.
I thanked Mom for the ride and headed inside. Aria has already bolted for choir. I am sure she has some friends she looks forward to when she goes. Aria is way more sociable than me. I have met her friends several times and sometimes I sit with her friend group. Considering the awkwardness of the situation, however, I decided I should sit alone and give my little sister her space. Much to her protest though. I couldn't be the loser big sister who has no friends so she hangs out with her little sister's friends. That's kind of weird.
Even so, I drag myself to my locker to put my stuff away. When I get there I notice a pink envelope taped to my locker that is signed, To Sadie R. on it. As I grabbed the envelope off of the locker, I looked around to see if I could find its sender. I have never received something like this before. It is in really neat handwriting too and the envelope has drawn roses on it. This has to be a prank.
I opened up my locker and replaced my backpack with some school books. I will just take the letter with me and read it in my spare time. If it is a prank, I'll just throw it out. Then again I am surprised to see someone would even prank me. I always thought I was a ghost at this school.
When I got to my music lessons, I noticed that my music teacher wasn't there. This is very typical of Mr. Ireno. Sigh...I guess while I wait I could read this letter that was addressed to me. I hope...it is something new.
