The wind rushed past. I didn't where I was. I couldn't bring myself to open my eyes. All I could hear was the wind. And... What was that? A voice? From where? Open your eyes, open your eyes! Hurry, something is wrong!
I woke up with a start. I shivered, curling into a tight ball under my frayed quilt. Everything was going to be fine. It wasn't real. It wasn't real...
I shook my head. No need for more nightmares. You'll keep getting them if you think about them. I pulled my dream journal from my badly built end table. I stared at the blue plastic cover. When I was younger, I got the strangest feeling to cover the poor journal in stickers of rainbows and unicorns, and then give it a healthy coating of glitter.
Out of frustration, I scribbled out my old neat handwriting, scrawling across the front, "MY ENDLESS WOLRD OF NIGHTMARES" in messy letters. About time I did that.
I heard Jessie's voice from downstairs calling my name. I quickly jotted down what I saw, I mean, heard. I scrambled out of my bed, fiddling with the latch to the door. It swung down into the light of the hallway. I jumped down, landing with a swoop. I gave myself a ten. You would be good at it too if you did it everyday. I mean, jumping out of a trapdoor to the attic.
I raced down the hall, skidding around the corner. CRASH. Ushinatta was staring at me. Of course he wouldn't fall over. He never falls over.
"Sorry Ushin."
"Don't call me Ushin."
"Whatever.... Ushin!" I took off down the stairs, leaving Ushinatta glancing back behind. "It sounds more manly!"
I halted to a stop. Meli was blinking in surprise a few inches away from my face. She smiled nervously.
"You know I can't undertand you when you just smile... Good bye!"
I stomped away, leaving her blinking in confusion. Serves her right.
I continued into the kitchen. Jessie was trying to make pancakes again.
"Good morning Jess. Attempting at pancakes once again I see."
"I can do it!"
"Remember what happened last time?"
"Yes! But I know what I did wrong. You see... All you need to so is-" She shifted the pancake in the pan, causing an explosion not big, but really.
"Not let it explode!" I smiled, twisting on my heel to grab a piece of toast on the counter "Hope you didn't cook this!"
Jessie stuck her tongue out at me as I skipped out the door.
I continued out the door. Another long day...
Dusk was already settling before I pushed the trapdoor up into the darkness of the attic. I switched on the light I fastened out of lightbulbs I "borrowed" from Jessie.
I lingered by the switch for awhile. I really didn't want another nightmare. They were getting worse. Some day they would swallow me whole.
After the lights went out, I sat down hard on my bed. I finally managed to slide down under my cover, falling into a new nightmare.
