Chapter 11

"Look I am enjoying a pleasant coversation with Kim here and we do not wish to be interrupted" Eric was polite, but there was a dangerous undertone to his steady voice that put me on edge. "All I wanted was to have a word with her. You two can go back to your little lovefest afterwards but she did come here with me and the least she can do is have the decency to acknowledge me" Jack replied. I had heard enough. Eric opened his mouth to reply but I got in first.

"Jack" I stood up and walked over to the two boys. "Fine, If you want to talk, then lets talk" I went to follow Jack, but first gave Eric a peck on the cheek that left him feeling pleased and me feeling like I still had some control over the situation. I followed Jack outside into the large garden. It was a warm night and many people were outside, lying on the grass observing the stars or busy kissing in the moonlight. We found a seat away from them all on the slightly damp grass by a large hedge and I raised my eyebrow expectantly at him in the darkened night.

"So what is so important that you needed to drag me off so urgently for?" I questioned, trying to keep calm. I wanted this resolved as quickly as possible.

Jack paused before answering. "I asked you to this party with me tonight and you accepted. If you weren't interested in coming with me you should have said so instead of just ignoring me the entire night." Wait, so now I was the guilty one? "I haven't seen you all night and when I finally locate you, you are flirting with some hot shot foreign guy" he added and I couldn't contain myself any longer. He was seriously making all of this my fault?

"I expected to spend a fun night with you. I spent ages with Amber this afternoon doing my hair and makeup, looking foward to tonight, then you turn up with a car full of our mates and make me feel very confused" my voice rose a notch and his calm tone infuriated me further.

"They just needed a ride. I didn't think you would mind. We are all friends" he responded defensively.

"Well I did mind. Plus, to make matters worse I get here and the first thing you do is flirt with the host. How does that make me feel?" I asked and he sighed heavily. "Kim, for crying out loud I was just being friendly. Last time I checked we were only here as friends"

I bit  my lip, because I couldn't let him see how much that hurt me, but I was powerless to stop a single tear from rolling down my face. I was lucky the dark night hid it and I could still respond with the anger the situation required. "I can never work you out Jack Brewer. One minute you are playing the flirty potential boyfriend, next the easygoing friend. You lead me on then leave me wondering if you ever actually cared while you go off with some other cake faced girl. When you asked me to this party, I was beginning to think that you cared for me as more than friends, that our confusing past of half dates and almost kisses were behind us. When I danced with Eric it was because he was next in the circle. However, when I sat talking with him it was because I had fun and enjoyed his company. With him I  knew where I stood."

I was panting heavily from my long rant and desperately tried to slow down my breathing as I awaited his next retort. Yet all I got was a confused reply of "Wait-flirty potential boyfriend?"

Oh No. Now you have done it Kim!

Not wanting to remain in his company a second longer I got to my feet. "Hey Kim just wait a second" he pleaded but I fled from the garden. I finally found refuge in the bathroom and locked myself in, studying my face in the mirror. That single tear had disloged some of my mascara and a sole black streak now covered my cheek. I took a hand towel from a pile and wiped it away.

Jack finally knew how I felt. Great. He probably wanted nothing more to do with me now. Who spends the night flirting when they are supposed to be with their friend? I deserve his anger. This is all my fault!

I really did not want to stay at the party a second longer so I whipped out my cellphone from my handbag. Yet I didn't get much further than the home screen. I had changed the photo while I was waiting earlier. Jack and I were staring back at me. We had just finished a tournament where we had won our respective matches. We both wore medals and had been laughing into the camera. His arm was casually placed around my shoulders and I remember how much that gesture had meant to me then.

As I studied the picture a smile grew on my face. We were such good friends, I am sure if I worked hard I could regain that. Yet my confidence disappeared a moment later as there was a knock at the door and a cry of "Hey Kim, open up"

Dah Dah Dah. Who do you think it is and what will they say. I don't want this relationship of theirs to move to quickly but I am worried I am just putting of the inevitable unnecissarily. What do you guys think? What should happen next? Any ideas will be welcome. Thanks
