"Are you ever on time?" I asked while sliding into Stella's SUV.
Luckily, she had just honked the horn when she pulled into my driveway instead of coming to the door. Both my parents were already hesitant when I had climbed out of the carriage house and waited patiently by the bay window. They had assumed it was a boy because every parents fears that no-good-darn-boy.
Anna and I were in cahoots. When I gave her the signal, she distracted both my parents as I slid out the back door heading towards Stella. Of course I did have to promise explaining everything to Anna but after much contemplation I owed her that much.
"It's only 7:15," Stella brushed off her tardiness.
I let my purse drop to my feet.
"Don't expect her to be punctual. Ever." The voice behind me clarified as I spun around griping her hot pink seat covers.
Looking into the back seat I saw that almost every seat was filled. Sandra was sitting in the seat directly behind me with her arms crossed tightly around her chest. Jordan and someone who I recognized from our P.E class as Holly sat in the back seat. No one looked overly thrilled to be in the vehicle. Sandra was with her ex-best friend/nemesis who she had plotted an epic undertaking from, Holly had a terrified look on her face and Jordan was... well no one knows exactly what Jordan is.
"So where to next boss lady?" Jordan asked from the backseat.
Point proven, I thought to myself.
"We have one more stop and then my house," Stella replied after she had thoroughly rolled her eyes at Jordan's spunky attitude.
Stella, Sandra and Holly all had their war faces on while Jordan giggled at something she thought of in her head.
Finally Stella put the SUV in reverse and we pealed out of the driveway and down the street. From the passenger seat I looked at Stella. I watched as her jaw stayed ridged, her fingers tightening around the steering wheel. Why did everyone seem so on edge?
"Stop the car," I shouted even though Stella seemed unfazed by my outburst. She continued on her path, merging lanes and getting onto the highway.
"The game night?" I gasps-"It's tonight?" I questioned, shouting in Stella's ear that no doubt was ringing from my high pitches squeal.
A wicked smirk came across Stella's face as she neither confirmed nor denied my allegations. I sat with my trap wide open as I contemplated how dangerous it would be to punch the driver in the face.
"Come one, Eden. You shouldn't be so surprised." Sandra's voice rang from behind me.
The five of us sat quietly listening to the low mumble of the local radio station. Jordan's fingers tapped against the seat while she hummed a melody. The silence was wearing on me. The longer we drove and no one spoke the more questions I thought about.
