Silver Lining

Glittering flakes drifted down, infrequently and delicately, scattering the brightly coloured layer of scarlet and amber leaves, assuming a hazy blend of winter and autumn. A blackbird swooped down, perching steadily on the park bench next to me- it would have been invisible if not for the soft light of the harvest moon.

I shivered, exhaling slowly as I inhaled what this all meant: summer was definitely over. I could no longer cling to it like I once had done, I had to let go. What happened last summer will no longer return to pleasantly; or unpleasantly haunt me. As I watched the white mist of my breath float into oblivion, I absorbed the full truth of what tonight meant.

Tonight meant letting go.

Letting go of the tears, the laughter, the seemingly endless memories. It was as good a feeling as it was scary, and as the lone blackbird flew away with the summer, I realised that maybe that was what the 31st of October was all about. Summer theoretically ends when September starts, but no one is anywhere near ready to say goodbye. October is about mustering the courage to admit that it is over, or at least, it was for me. And then on the night where everyone is scared, everyone is happy.

And I was just happy to let go of everything as the blackbird disappeared.

(A/N) Hi guys, I know I haven't updated in ages, but I have been extremely busy reading so many entries for the Hallowe'en contest, so I haven't found the time. The entries were all awesome, though, and it made me feel like writing a Hallowe'en related story myself.

I'm obviously not entering, but I felt super bad for not updating, so here you go! It's not very long, but I have a kind of Writer's Block at the moment, so bear with me.

I also wanted to thank everyone who has been voting for this book recently! The comments, feedback and support are really so sweet and kind and asdfghjkl, you know?

Anyways, thanks again and please consider voting and/or commenting!
