Chapter 24

Cole's POV

I followed Neuhart outside, there were a surprising amount of people, at least twenty, out here just enjoying the sun and hanging out; soldiers stood near the helicopters and vehicles and made sure no one went too close.

The girls ran ahead of us and and rolled around in a patch of dried grass "They're very well behaved" Neuhart commented "Last night I couldn't hear them at all, several people express concerns that they would be nosiey". "Thanks" I said, slightly awkward; still not over the fact of how good this guy looked.

Don't get me wrong I wasn't going to cheat on Chandler, with Chandler I felt an emotional connection, but with this guy I just wanted him to pin me to a wall and teach me how to take orders.

Neuhart drew a handgun from his waist and cocked it before placing a hand on a door handel of a building, before he could open it though the girls started whining and acting anxious "I wouldn't go in there, there are walkers behind that door" I said quickly.

Neuhart looked at me "Then we don't need to go inside, this has told me all I needed to know. Mr Tomlinson would you consider being an entry guard and working under me? We haven't been able to create a better system than a physical examination or a quarantine for new recruits or injuries and your dogs might be able to help. If you accept you'll be working for 11 credits an hour and work in that little building" he said pointing to a small guardhouse that was right next to one of exits, near the military's vehicles. "I'll join you on one condition" I said "Let me see my parents right now please". Neuhart nodded "Follow me then".

"Dad! Papa!" I said after Neuhart opened the door and I saw my parents in a tiny room; I tacked Pops in a hug which made him fall over since he was sitting on the floor and I gave Dad a much gentler hug, he looked so much better. Dad was still weak and bedridden but at least his eyes were open and he didn't look like he would die at any moment "Hey son" Dad said as he placed his hand on my cheek and stroked my cheek with his thumb "Sorry for worrying you".

Neuhart walked out of the room and close the door behind him; I sat down next to Dad and he chuckled as the girls started licking his face. "I'm so happy that you're feeling better Dad; no offense but I don't think Papa was ready to be a single father just yet". Pops laughed "I'd never be ready to be a single father" he said as he covered Dad's hand with his.

"How's your sister? Is she ok? Louis said that she rescued us" Dad asked. I nodded before explaining everything: how Ana was an important person here, how we were now going to live in a store, the card currency, how Oshihiro assigned us jobs and finally how I was going to become a guard.

"Good, I'm glad that Ana is ok" Dad said as he pulled the blanket higher until it was under his chin; I cringed "You probably need to rest, I'm sorry but I just wanted to make sure you're ok" I said before standing up. Dad managed a small smile "They say I should be good to leave by tomorrow, they're just making sure I don't relapse". I hugged Dad and Pops one more time before walking out of the room; Neuhart was gone.

I walked around the airport, getting lost a couple of times but the soldiers seemed helpful enough, plus the inhabited area of the airport wasn't that big. Going back "home" the tension in the room was palpable; Ana and Chandler sat on opposite sides of the store, seemingly ignoring each other. Chandler looked up as I entered and he smiled at me "Welcome back Cinnamon Roll". Ana snorted and Chandler whipped his head around "You got something to say?" he snapped; Ana stood up "Cole can I please talk to you?"

Ana and I walked a little away from the store "Cole I don't think you should be with Chandler" she said. "And why is that?" I asked, genuinely curious. "Chandler is as affectionate as a rattlesnake and is as open as a porcupine; I don't know a single thing about him and whenever I ask he just tells me to go away or evades the question...I don't think that's healthy and I don't think you should hang with someone like that".

"Well...what did you ask him?" I asked petting Shylo. "Just normal get-to-know-you questions about like his family and stuff" Ana answered. I nodded "Yeah he's kinda touchy about that". Ana sighed "Cole, I'm just scared that he'll turn abusive; when I kept asking him about his family he just started shouting at me". "I understand Ana, but Chandler wouldn't hurt me, and as for the shouting you can't just keep pushing him because he will push back". "Fine Cole but I'll keep an eye on him" Ana said "I'll be back I have to take care of some stuff".

I watched her leave before going inside the shop, Chandler was inside cleaning his crossbow. "Hey" I said, sitting next to him. "Hi" he said before he leaned over and kissed me on the cheek. I chuckled "What was that for?" He smirked "What I can't kiss my boyfriend?" I rolled my eyes playfully and was surprised when Chandler pulled me down and guided my head to his chest.

"Ok what's going on? First a kiss on the cheek and now a cuddle?" I asked, looking up at him. "Cole...listen...you know I'd never hurt you right?" Chandler said softly; I got up on one elbow "What did Ana say to you?" I asked. "I just want you to know that I'll never hurt you, alright" he said, evading the question "I'll die before anyone hurts you, myself included".
