Cole's POV

I groaned as I grabbed my screaming phone and pressed the home button to turn off the alarm. God, the first day of school from winter break was worse; after two weeks of sleeping in past ten it was tough to suddenly wake up at six thirty again. I threw my shoe at the far wall of my room and a moment later a heard a pound back; since Ana and I shared a bathroom we developed a system in the morning cause if Ana had her way, she'd take a three hour long hot shower. I laid in bed staring at my ceiling as I heard our bathroom door open and close as Ana got out.

Ana and I went our separate ways after Dad dropped us off from school on his way to the clinic; she went to hang out with her jock friends and I went to sit inside my first class so I wouldn't be late or have to fight with anyone about my seat.

As I entered the building, I passed by a kid who sat by himself with his eyes closed listening to his headphones, but I had no idea what his name was. He and I shared a lot of the same classes but we never spoke; he always had a "this is bullshit" look on his face that perfectly matched his attitude so I tended to avoid him. I had to admit he was very hot though, in a bad boy/dangerous sort of way. I don't think I've ever seen him smile.

I made my way to my math class and got my favorite seat, two rows from the back but directly in front of the whiteboard. Taking out my phone, I messed around online until class started. "Cole Lucas Tomlinson?" my teacher said; "Here" I said, raising my hand but not taking my eyes of the screen. Usually the teacher was pretty strict about electronics but since I got A's on all my tests and homework, he didn't care. About ten minutes into the lecture that kid walked into class and since he always came in late, just went and sat down in the only seat available, next to mine.

I put away my phone as I heard the phrase "due tomorrow" near the end of class as the teacher started passing out a worksheet or whatever it was to the class. I immediately started working on it; the biggest evil ever was homework so I tried to do all of my work at school. Everyone sprinted out of the class as the bell rang but I sat there and worked on my worksheet, determined to not have homework. "Chandler can I see you please before you go?" the teacher said loudly over the chaos.

"Chandler you're sitting at a D right now; unless you pass the next two tests with at least a C, you're not going to be able to graduate in June. You need Algebra 2 to graduate." the teacher said softly but I heard every word since I was still sitting in class doing the worksheet and it was dead quiet. "I suggest you study harder or get a tutor or something because whatever you're doing right now isn't working" the teacher added since Chandler hadn't said anything.

"Would it help if I selected a tutor for you?" the teacher said before raising his voice "Cole, do you think you can tutor Chandler at lunch today? You have the highest grade in the class". I looked up and met Chandler's eyes. "Uh, yeah, I guess" I said before looking back down at my paper. I never noticed that Chandler had really beautiful eyes and I didn't want him to see me blush; dammit why couldn't I have been like my sister, she was unfazed by everything. "Do you want to go just go now since it's already lunch?" Chandler asked as he walked over "We can go to the library". I nodded and grabbed my things before following him out.

In the library we sat close together since I was left handed and he was right handed so we weren't elbow fencing. Trying to explain math though when you're distracted by a hot boy sitting that close to you was nearly impossible so I kept explaining every single little step more for my benefit, so I could keep on track.

"That makes a lot more sense" Chandler as he finished the first problem of the homework and did it correctly "You explain it a lot better than Mr. Lopez does". I smiled and mumbled "Thanks". "Are you free after school? Maybe we can grab a burger and you can help me finish" he said as the bell rang, signaling the end of lunch.

"Sure, or we can go to your house inste-" No, trust me you don't want to come to my house. I'll wait for you outside of the art building?" he said as he put everything in his backpack. "Yeah that's fine" I said as I put my stuff away; I looked up to see Chandler offering me a five dollar bill "Here, since I bet you had better things to do at lunch since tutor me". "I'm not going to take your money, just buy me food this afternoon and we'll call it even" I said.

"No it's not even. I invited you out so of course I'm going to pay for you but I still need to pay you back..." Chandler thought for a moment before saying softly "What about a kiss? I can tell you're into me" he said with a smirk.

I froze as Chandler leaned into me before placing his lips on my cheek for a moment before pulling away. The look on his face was as close to a smile as I've ever seen "I'll see you this afternoon then for our date" he said before walking out of the library.

I woke up with a smile on my face, sandwiched between my two dogs; is that how Chandler and I would have been if the apocalypse never happened? It was still dark so I adjusted myself into a more comfortable position, as comfortable as you can be with two massive dogs practically lying on top of you, as I tried to find sleep again; I was kind of disappointed when I didn't see Chandler in his usual sleeping spot but he probably just went to the bathroom.

In the darkness I heard Pops whisper "So then it's decided?" "Yes, I think it's the best way" Ana replied. "We'll have resistance" I heard Neuhart say. "Has anyone seen where Zayn went by the way?" I heard Uncle Liam asked. "I'm not sure, maybe he left with Chandler" Pops offered.
