"Ohmygosh....he is so cute," Ashley gushed immediately after lunch while we headed back to class. 3 more hours and it would be dawn and our day would end. Dhampirs and Moroi lived on a backwards schedule from humans. When the sun came up, we slept; and when the moon was out, we went to school.

"I don't see what's so amazing about him," I retorted, thinking of how creepy spirit-user Adrian Ivashkov was. The Molnija marks on my neck weren't numerous....I only had one. And honestly, it came from a huge accident on a trip to the mall....

In our world, things were simple. Dhampirs were built with strong sturdy bodies, and therefore were taught to fight. We were half vampire, half human (and yes, we liked our occasional burgers and fries too). Moroi were tall, slender, and pale vampires who easily got sunburned. Dhampirs were trained to be guardians for royal Moroi (there were 12 royal families).

And guard the Moroi from what, you ask?

That would be the Strigoi. Strigoi were vicious, undead vampires who used to be Moroi and Dhampirs. Once you were a Strigoi, all you knew was blood lust, rage, violence, and greed...nothing more. Moroi and Dhampirs weren't really considered undead (more on that later). Strigoi lusted for Moroi blood, wanting to make all the Moroi Strigoi. For a Moroi to become Strigoi, they would have to drink all the blood from a human and kill them...or, a Strigoi could turn them (by biting them, of course). The only way for a Dhampir to become a Strigoi, would be if the Strigoi turned them. Until now, there was never a way to turn Strigoi back into what they once were.

Moroi all wield a type of elemental magic, like, earth, fire, air, and water. Spirit was one of the most rarest element that Moroi possessed, it was only recently revealed to be an element. It allowed the Moroi to be able to grow plants, heal wounds, and, newly discovered...turn a Strigoi back into their original state. To do this, a spirit-using Moroi must use an element infused silver stake and plunge it into the Strigoi's heart. This is very difficult to do, considering only Dhampirs ever staked and killed Strigoi because of their strength, and Moroi didn't have that strength.

But Lissa Dragomir, the new queen of the vampire world, did it herself, and it was a huge success. At first people didn't believe it, but it was true. Her guardian, Dimitri Belikov, was once turned into a menacing Strigoi but was turned back by her own hand. It was a miracle story, and now that it was possible, people were trying to find more and more spirit users to turn back the ones that they loved.

Adrian Ivashkov was a spirit user, which would explain why Ashley was so attracted to him. Ashley had always admired Lissa and her grace and all that, and especially her talent with spirit. Spirit users tended to be quite charming, although if they used their spirit too much, it had bad side affects such as mood swings or suicidal thoughts.

God. I sounded like a history text book.

"Adrian is so freakin' gorgeous, he asked me out on a date," Ashley said cheerily, sighing with true happiness.

I practically choked hearing that news. "What?" I managed to say, before coughing uncontrollably.

"Jealous?" Ashley taunted, sticking out her tongue.

"As if!" I exclaimed, feeling my cheeks getting hot.

"Well, I'm meeting him right after classes end," Ashley said. "He's leaving tomorrow, I'm so upset!"

"Good," I muttered.

"What?"

"I don't really like him," I replied to Ashley's remark.

"Why not?" She asked, twirling her hair as we headed down the hallway. Ashley was a pretty little redhead, a tad bit hotheaded, but lovable all the way.

"He's a creep!" I cried, wondering why she didn't realize that.

"Whatever Emma. You just don't like new people," she said, giggling, and headed off to class. I sighed, shook my head, and smiled. Maybe Ashley was right. I had always been such a paranoid, quirky, jumpy Dhampir. But the thing was, I just didn't want Mr. Adrian Ivashkov hurting her feelings.

Ashley had been a wreck after Wesley and her had broken up. Every night she would have a nightmare, tossing and turning in her sleep mumbling Rose Hathaway and then she would wake up sobbing.

I swear to God, if Adrian even thought about hurting her, he would be in for the beating of his life. And it was gonna be scary. Scary...but good.

Very, very, very good. I chuckled darkly and slipped into class just before the late bell rung. Nothing like some ass kicking to get my day started.
