Chapter 1: The Beginning.
Blinding pain spread from my thigh all over my leg. I am put back on the table in a vast white room. The antiseptic smell lingers in the air and blurs my vision. A constant pounding is getting louder by the second. Soon my head will explode.
I struggle against the bonds that hold me in place as I get injected with something. An agonising shriek escapes my lips and echoes off the pure white walls of the den like room. In a matter of seconds my voice falters, and everything around me swarms with black spots. The movement of feet and the lock of a door is the last thing I hear before I pass out.
I awake again and find myself on a warm bed with a cup of cold tea at my bedside. It was standing there for long, because most of the liquid has evaporated, leaving brown stains on the cup. I slowly raise my head but immediately regret. My head spins and pounds. I feel it and it is perfectly whole.
The events of last night come swarming at me. I start to remember things. A door being blown if its hinges, shouting and commotion. And I ended up here, in a house that overlooks the lake and stands protected in the shadows of the mountains.
I hear footsteps approaching. They are dull and heavy; the footsteps of a man that has long since been happy.
My door cracks open and a handsome young man with shaggy black hair and striking, crystal blue eyes. He is well built and has a slight frown on his face. But it instantly disappears once he sees that I am awake.
"Hello," he greets.
"Who are you?" I question.
The boy sighs. "You are my sister. Our parents got divorced and I went to live with our father. You weren't born yet."
I process his words.
"Thank you," I avert his gaze.
"You're welcome," he glances and my thigh, which is heavily wrapped in bandages. I didn't even notice them. "Are you feeling okay?"
"Considering I got severely cut, injected with what might have been poison and then getting a migraine, you could say that this isn't my kind of day. But I feel better thanks."
He offered a small smile. "My name is Jason."
"Elizabeth. Pleased to finally meet my brother."
"Come on, I'll help you get to the kitchen."
"No, no. It's fine, I'll stay here."
"Are you sure?" He looked at me, worried.
"I'm sure," I manage a small smile. Jason closes the door. I lay back into the comfortable bed, thinking.
This has all been a shock for me. But why didn't my mother mention anything? Why didn't father ever visit? And most importantly, how did he know I was in that laboratory? I wasn't sure I could trust him. But I do know that I can't trust anyone except myself in this messed up world. It's sad, really. It's sad that those mad scientists have driven me to a point where I'm paranoid. Paranoid of the world, of the people. But every time that I started trusting it ended badly. My vision swam as I remembered the way I ended up in that cursed lab in the first place. I was a foolish, stupid girl. But I've learned my lesson, I'll never trust, or love again.
As all those thoughts swarmed in my mind, I slowly drifted into sleep.
