...........
During the night, I had waken up a couple of times to the noise of thunder. Now that I think about it, I did see some storm clouds coming from the west when I was being pulled away by Sally. Then again, I also saw some more coming from the east and northeast when I was stopped by the guard who took our tickets before we boarded the cruise. There would be a lot of rain in this trip.
I was on my way to ask a guy for breakfast. Sally probably new the guy since she gave me a perfect description of him. But I didn't need to find him.
On my way, I spotted Grandpa with a huge breakfast enough for 3-4 people. He sure had a lot of food for one old guy. I hoped no one was sitting by him. I drove near and out of no where, I felt a sudden the burst of excitement. Not for the food, but I remembered everything about yesterday. I was so excited about the cruise, our room with a magnificent view, and my new friend Joy, that I forgot all about why I was here: in the dining room. I wonder if I'd get to see Joy again. It was a big cruise, and I had no idea where she was. Then again, I could find her in the dining room, if I come about the right time. In the corner of my eyes, I noticed Grandpa and his mouth full of food watching me. He had stopped with the delightful face he made whenever there was food he liked, and posed concerning towards me. His face was all messed up with chocolate and jam and butter all over. He was a messy eater, and a lover of sweats, but this really made him look like a messy 5 year old. The thought of him like that made me burst into laughter. This was quite embarrassing since I first had an exited, then a serious look, then out of no where, I burst into laughter.
I don't know whether it's because he was embarrassed for me, or he thought it was funny too, but Grandpa started to join in with me. I could imagine us being the laughing stock and totally weird ones out of everyone in this dining room. We were the only two laughing and for no reason. The people had stopped eating, stopped their conversations, and whatever they were doing just to look at us. Even the waiters and waitresses stopped serving the orders to stare at our foolishness. I was so embarrassed and this made me blush my way out of laughter. But it didn't stop Grandpa.
Sally walked in and Grandpa finally stopped laughing.
"Page."
"Yes." I was beginning to think she had seen me in my embarrassing moment. I started to blush again.
Then she whispered, "Why was Grandpa laughing? Does he know that he is embarrassing himself, and both you and me?"
I felt guilt all over me. I was the one who made Grandpa laugh and embarrass all three of us. But no way was I telling Sally that.
She sat by Grandpa and started breakfast. I also joined in.
When I was leaving the place, I remembered all the people I had myself embarrassed in front of. Good thing there weren't too many. Now whenever I see these people, I'd probably be blushing my way passed them.
As I exited, I bumped into a security guard who told us to stay in.
"See the storm?" He pointed out. How did I not realize it? Was I not paying enough attention? Well, it was my fault that I was busy laughing with Grandpa.
"How long till it ends?"
"This'll probably go on for a while. At least you have food." He was sure looking on the bright side of things.
"So we're stuck here?"
"Until further notice."
"How long will that be?"
Then he looked around to see if anyone else was watching. He bent down and whispered, "The storm is getting really bad. I mean really bad. You'll have to stay in here for a long time."
That got me worried. But why did he tell me? I don't think he's supposed to tell anyone. He then gave me a hopeful smile and I went back to my seat.
"We have to stay in here."
"Yes, I know. The storm is getting really bad." Sally answered. Then I noticed Grandpa's absence.
"Where's Grandpa?"
Sally was surprised to see him missing. The only door in here was the exit. The guard was blocking it.
"He must've sneaked out while the guard wasn't looking." I said.
"Neah... He needed the bathroom. Maybe the guard wasn't looking and didn't stop him. So he has no idea how unsafe that is." Sally's prediction was good, until she mentioned the danger. Then I heard the rain tap so hard, that I thought maybe it was hailing! Unfortunately, my prediction was correct. I heard the guard yell an order for everyone to get under protection. "It's hailing!" He yelled. But we did have the roof over the dining room. Then I heard the hail rage. It started coming down even harder. The commotion in the dining room made it even louder. It was chaos; I couldn't hear myself think.
"Page! Get in here! Now!" Sally yelled under all the noise. I almost couldn't hear her. I ran to Sally, with Grandpa on my mind. But before I could reach the shelter, the roof collapsed and even more chaos was created. I was only a couple of feet away from the danger. No one was hurt, but with our main protection gone, the hail easily reached us and fell on the heads of this it was destined to. That included me. One fell on my arm and it hurt; thankfully, I managed to spot a nearby table.
The sound it made was so loud, and on top of all the screaming and yelling, it was too loud for anyone to ignore. I simply froze. I never reached the shelter. The only protection we had was just demolished by hail.
Once the roof collapse, there was just too much screaming and yelling and running around, the nice guard I had encountered, blew his whistle. It didn't calm everyone down, but it was quiet enough for him to give out directions. He ordered half the people to leave with another guard, and once they had left, the other half, including Sally and me, followed that guard. I was glad to be with him. He seemed like he knew what he was doing. And he was quite a gentlemen. But I couldn't get Grandpa out of my head. Sally ran to him.
"Excuse me, sir?"
"Yes? Wait," he said giving out more directions. He was too busy for Sally to get a piece of him.
"I'm sorry, ma'm; but I'm just to busy right now. The only things that matter is your safety. Everyone's safety."
"But, sir, not everyone is safe." This seemed to get his attention.
He looked at her, pausing on what he was doing. "What do you mean? I have my entire group." He started counting to be sure.
"No, sir, Grandpa went in the bathroom. He wasn't with us. Please I have to find him, plea..."
"I'm sorry, but I just can't help you right now. This is my group and its enough....too much... Your Grandpa will be alright. Others are checking for the other passengers..." Then he resumed his job. Sally stopped trying, and she looked like she was going to run off to find Grandpa herself. But before she got the chance, someone yelled.
"The hail has stopped!" That was great news! But the worst was about to come.
