Then, I started to build the shelter and Joy joined in. It was pretty simple: we grabbed the long piece of wood, struggling, we carried it to the center of the place, where the ground was the hardest (but softened by the rain), brought the piece of wood up high, and with our force and gravity by our side, we pushed and brought the wood down so it would go deep into the ground. Now, this did take some mussels, so we needed help. Unfortunately, Emma was too angry to help us and Riley probably agreed with her. So did I, but....still...
And anyways! We continued to do so, and stuck it to the hard ground, which was easier to do since the rain had softened it. This was the perfect type of ground because after the rain, it would be its usual sturdy, hard-as-rock-ground. So this meant the piece of wood would stay securely in the ground; which also meant a sturdy shelter. Joy and I stuck the wood pieces to the ground until we made a straight line. We ran back and came back with some more. We continued to build the shelter into a long rectangle. The pieces of wood were very sturdy, which was to our advantage. But we did leave enough space for it to be a door. I had an idea of how to make our door; and roof; which was the most thing we needed now.
Emma wouldn't speak to me after yelling at me to get back where it was dry before I caught a cold. But I really didn't care, we were out in the wild, and getting a cold meant nothing to me. When I told her that, she stayed silent and angry. Riley translated her silence.
"She means that because we're out in the wild, and we don't have doctors or anything, getting a cold is not even an option."
I kind of agreed with her.
For the roof, we used those long branches which came from most of the trees here and we placed them on top of the shelter to make the roof. With a couple of vines, we were able to secure the branches. We did the same for the door. We lined up the branches until they formed into a rectangle (slightly larger then the entrance), and tied them together securely with the strong vines. Then we just placed it to block the entrance. It actually worked great, because we were able to slide the door so we could come in and easily slide it back to close it. There was no need to cary the door every time we walked in the shelter. I was actually pretty proud of this. We spent the night there, and the next whole day, we chilled in the beach in the scorching sun. But I was glad, and thankful while remembering the freezing cold back home...
....
And I also remembered we were going to Florida to find Dad. And to see Mom. But now I can never do that. Despite being stranded on an island, Sally and Grandpa are gone too.
Joy walked out of the water, feet splashing, footsteps being left in the sand, and water dripping from her hair and clothes. She had taken off her trousers and her shirt, and was wearing shorts and a T-shirt she was wearing under her. She came up and sat down on the sand where I was sitting.
"The water's great."
"Thanks, but no thanks. I'll go swimming later." I said as I continued to ponder of whether Grandpa and Sally had the chance to survive...and if they did,...if they even had the slightest chance...had they made it? And what about Mom and Dad? Ugh! Stop it! I said to myself. Stop worrying about the past, many worry about now...this place...this island...it's like island paradise...
Maybe I was right...maybe this place is just too comfortable...to easy to settle in...and too easy to survive...just too easy.
"Where's Riley?" Joy asked turning to me. I slightly jumped and turned to her with a shrug. She pushed herself up and ran to the water, where Emma was. I could her her shouting as she ran to her.
"Hey, Emma! Where's Riley?"
"She's cooking up something in headquarters." I wondered why she was angry with me and stopped talking to me, when Joy did the same. She had ran with me in the rain, and even after she told us not to, she had been the one to build the shelter with me, and she had been the one to catch a cold...for a couple hours...
Anyways, going back to the matter...
I quickly got to my feet and ran toward headquarters, where I found Riley making something...something sweet.
"Mmm,...." I said as I came closer to look. In the coconut shell, it was an orangish-reddish color, jelly like substance being boiled. It smelled even better than it looked.
"It's kind of a new recipe..."
"It smells great!"
"..yea...it's all those berries mixed with a little coconut milk. I just hope everyone likes it."
"I definitely think they will...oh yea...Riley, can I ask you something?"
"Sure."
"Umm...I have this feeling....I think....do you think this place is just too easy? I mean we're in the wilderness and...it shouldn't be this easy. To survive. We have everything, everything we possibly need."
"You just thought of this?" She said turning to me with a grin. But soon that grin disappeared. "It is. And I'm worried. I have a feeling we are not alone here." I didn't understand. This place was isolated. But knowing she was serious, I nodded and promised to stay cautious. And I did so.
Then I heard something from behind me, in the bushes. Must be the wind, or some kind of animal. Everyone else is in the main beach. But then I heard a loud pop. It was a rifle shot. Less than a second had passed, and Riley was shot, fallen to the ground.
