Here we go again.

"Invisible?" Alex asked.

She immediately regretted asking. The look of pain that transformed the other girl's face made Alex wince inside, like someone had stabbed her in the gut and twisted the blade.

Never mind. She had been stabbed before. This was worse, somehow.

"Sure, ask the invisible girl about what it's like to have absolutely no one talk to her." She spat, emerald green eyes hard as ice. The light that had illuminated them earlier was gone, gone, gone. "To spend every waking hour recording words no one will read, to speak and know not a single person will hear her words."

She gasped, a hand covering her mouth. Alex stared at her, amusement curling her lips upwards into a smile.

"I'm talking to you, aren't I?" The blond girl pointed out.

"Yeah, but you're the first." The other girl scowled. "Is this some bet? To see if you can get me to crack?"

Her eyebrows furrowed, Alex met the other girl's pained gaze.

"Why would I do something like that?"

"Because it's been done before." She replied plainly. "To try and get me to spill something, and then it circulates throughout the entire school. Trust me, it didn't take long for me to realize what was going on." She clutched the leather bound book she had been writing in to her chest protectively, both arms curled around it. "If that's your intentions, I highly suggest that you shut up and leave me alone. I don't appreciate falseness."

Alex, for once in her life, was speechless. She always knew what to say, always. But, faced with this livid girl who spoke so clearly, she didn't know how to respond.

And the silence confirms it.

I knew this was just another trick. Why would someone actually talk to me?"

"You know, I don't have to talk to you. I just thought I'd be polite and strike up conversation." Alex returned her attention to her sandwich, which was more than halfway finished. She tossed back the last few bites, took a sip from her thermos of orange juice, and rose to her feet.

"I'm Alex, by the way. I'm in your English class."

Hang on, she's talking again.

"Calypso."

The word was so faint, Alex had to strain to catch it.

"Repeat that, will you?"

"My name's Calypso."

Alex couldn't remember ever hearing her name, not even when the class had to introduce itself yesterday. Thinking back on it, she could almost swear Calypso hadn't spoken.

She was certain of it. They had skipped her over.

"You can call me Callie. If I had friends, that's what I'd tell them to do."

"Alright, Callie. See you around?"

"I don't know. Do you se invisible people?" Callie's scowl melted away, replaced with her usual poker face. She almost seemed to be faintly...smiling.

"Guess so." Alex waved, and Callie returned the gesture. She left, a sudden weight lifting itself from her shoulders. It was almost immediately replaced, almost doubling in force.

How could she have been so stupid? She couldn't have friends. Friends would only make things more complicated.

She could deal with that later. For now, she had more important matters to deal with.

Callie. Where did that come from?

Around her...Alex, that was her name, I can actually talk. I talked, and someone heard me.

It's a miracle. A miracle that won't last, but it's a miracle nonetheless.

I feel like cutting this off here. It might be short, but that's the impression that I got. Sorry!

Not really.

I just thought it'd be polite to say so. :P
