🌔 The House 🌖

Icy winds blew through the streets of the empty neighborhood. The leaves on the trees gently rustled with each breeze causing some to occasionally descend into the swirling air. The lamp posts that sat on either side of the road lit up the street casting strange figures on the side of each house. A small stone came to a rolling halt in the middle of the road where a young lady followed up behind it. The lady's hands were shoved into the pockets of her black sweatshirt, and her long, golden, blonde hair had been messily pushed into the hood that was pulled over her head. She walked slowly along the road, her brown eyes trained on the rock that had stopped a few paces in front of her. Approaching it, she playfully kicked it forward again then watched as it rolled along the pavement. The simple action gave her an odd sense of enjoyment which had made a small smile appear across her features.

She advanced towards the stone once more before coming to a sudden stop. An unseen force made her eyes divert themselves from the stone on the ground and up towards the house that stood at her side. Her smile slowly faded from her face as she stared at its looming figure. The windows on the house were closed and boarded over and parts of its black paint had begun to chip away. The young lady turned and faced the animus building, her eyes searching its walls for any sign of life. She had heard stories about dark figures that have been seen disappearing into the house, but never exiting. The stories also tell of red eyes that peered out between the boards on the windows, observing the activities taking place on the street.

Warnings from the townsfolk ran through the pretty blondes head. "Don't go near that house," they would say while others would warn to, "Stay away," before going on about the boy that resided there and how he was not to be tempered with. In spite of the warnings, she felt a strange attraction to the eerie building and wanted to get closer. Slowly, she began to drag her feet towards the house, her eyes flicking between the boarded windows and the door. Ignoring the voices in her head that were screaming to run away, she stepped onto the sidewalk that ran along the front of the home. The lamp post beside her suddenly began to quiver before completely going out, leaving the lady standing it shaded darkness. The only light that continued to illuminate the path to the house came from the moon. It shined brightly over the old shingles of the home, casting a new assortment of shadows along the pathway.

Letting out a breath that she didn't know she had been holding, the lady began down the winding pathway. Her heart started to beat faster and faster with every approaching step, but she refused to let fear take control. She came to a stop once she had reached the four steps that lead up to the front porch. She eyed them diligently before slowly ascending up them, each board creaking under her weight. Just as she arrived on the porch she noticed something from the window. It looked like a set of eyes staring in her direction but when she looked nothing was there. She shook the feeling of something watching her off and walked to the front door. Her hand found its way to the rusted door handle, and she carefully pushed the large door open. The old hinges connecting the door to its wooden frame letting out a loud ear piercing squeal which echoed through the dark house.

The blonde haired lady took a deep breath before slipping through the open door and into a poorly lighted room. There was just enough moonlight coming through the cracks in the windows to make out the silhouette of small sofa in the center. Two chairs sat in either side of it, one of them clearly visible and wearing away. There was a bookshelf on the far wall filled with various sizes of books. Some of them propped on the shelves while others had fallen to the floor. A fan was attached to the ceiling, but the moonlight that bounced off the spider webs hanging from it's blades showed clear signs of its inactivity.

She had just finished taking in her surroundings when the door suddenly slammed shut behind her, making her jump at the booming noise that filled the room. She spun on her heels, facing the door with eyes wide. Her desire to explore the house vanished and was replaced with the urge to leave. Her hands quickly grabbed onto the door handle and she pulled, desperately trying to escape. It wouldn't budge. Giving up, she turned back towards the open area of the room with her back against the door. She could feel the horror pumping through her veins and her heart felt as if it were about the burst from her chest.

She spoke under her breath in an attempt to calm herself, "It was probably just the wind. There is nothing to be scared of. It's just an old house, nothing more." But as she spoke she still had that feeling in her stomach that something wasn't quite right. Pushing herself off the door, she scanned her surroundings once more. She noticed a doorway on the far left side of the room and beyond it was a dark space. Hoping for other means of escape, the young lady began to make her way to the doorway. She was about half way there when she froze, her entire body filling with dread. A loud banging noise had interrupted the once silent room.

She stood for a moment before called out into the darkness, her voice bouncing off the walls of the room, "Hello?" The banging stopped, answering her question with silence. New types of fear began to materialize once she remembered that she wasn't alone. The boy that owned the house was there and most likely messing with her. She took a deep breath and attempted to make contact with him again, "I'm sorry for trespassing. I would really like to leave now." Yet again she was greeted by silence, no voices, no banging only dead silence. She took a deep breath, hopeless trying to shake the uneasy feelings away. She cut the distance between her and the doorway before peering in. It was pitch black and she knew there was no way she was going to be able to navigate through the darkness of the room.

Letting out a frustrated sigh, she took a small step back and turned around. What she was greeted by made her heart sink. It was the figure of a man. He stood before her, moonlight shining on his face and lighting up his features. He was frowning, his dark brown eyes scanning over her. For a moment she was paralyzed with fear, terrified of what he was going to do. Although, her fear vanished once she realized his expression wasn't one of malevolence but instead deep concern.
