Chapter One: Running From His Past

Point of View: Perseus Jackson

I crash through the trees, running from the Manticore, but I have several of its spikes in my back and one through my shoulder. I feel another stinging and I know a spike has went through my side. But so much poison, deadly or not, is fighting against my system and I'm losing blood very quickly.

The next spike hits between my shoulders blades, but misses my spine and I drop to my knees, coughing blood onto the forest floor. The foliage behind me parts loudly and the Manticore cackles as he comes around to my front. He lifts my chin and makes me look at him.

"Does it hurt?" He asks.

"Go to Tartarus." I spit, but it's no good. I can't move all that much anymore.

"Not today. And I'm not going to kill you. No, no. I am going to take you someplace secluded and torture you. I'm going to get my revenge and enjoy taming you, son of Poseidon." The Manticore tells me.

I growl. "I cannot be tamed by a monster. And I will not submit to you."

"Oh, I have my ways." He grins evilly.

"You are nothing compared to what Tartarus can do. I'd like to see you try." I smirk and he scoffs, rolling his eyes.

"He screwed up when he let that girl go free in a deal with you." Then a thought pops into his head, I can tell. "Didn't she cut you loose? Even after what you did for her? There are rumors about it, but I want to hear it from you. Aren't you too loyal?"

He knows he hit a nerve when my eyes widen. Then I glare, scowling. "Yes, she cut me loose. She broke my beating heart. I did everything to save her and she chooses work over me. I hate her with a passion so deep now that I'll never come to her aid again. Betrayal, that's all she is made of. Just like the rest of them. I'm ashamed to be a demigod. But I will never turn into a monster or do their bidding. Do what you want to me, because I guarantee whatever game you want to play, isn't going to work. They won't come after me, no one will. To them I'm no better than garbage."

The Manticore chuckles. "Ashamed, eh? No wonder, they did the one thing your loyal soul can never forgive."

A feral snarl comes from the woods to our right and I can't even turn my head to look. But a wolf plows right into the Manticore, then kills him before the monster can react. The wolf turns to me and I am at its mercy. It bounds right up to me and sinks its fangs into my good shoulder.

I grunt and feel something hot enter my bloodstream. Fighting off the poison and the wolf pulls away. It pulls out all of the spikes and I fall to my side. My body is convulsing and I am burning up. The wolf is standing over me.

'What's happening to me?' I think before everything goes black.
