The corridor came to an end in front of a massive set of double doors. They were made of a dark colored, heavy wood and had steel reinforcing. A set of guards stood on opposite sides of the doors, both of which saluted when the prince and I drew near.
"At ease, soldiers. You don't need to salute every time I walk by," the prince stated this as he saluted both of the men in return.
"Yes, your majesty." They spoke in unison as they dropped their arms to their sides and removed their weapons from in front of the double doors.
"The king is waiting for you. He expects you alone, but if you need me I will be waiting outside."
"Okay," I said taking a deep breathe and then releasing it as I walked through the doors and into the room...
As I walked in I took in the greatness of the room. Purple tapestries with gold trim depicting scenes adorned the walls along with antique swords and shields. A red carpet ran along the middle of the room with several crystal chandeliers hanging over it on the ceiling to light the way. I followed the red carpet until I came to the end where a gold throne held a muscular looking man. His hair was like salt and pepper. It was naturally a dark, rich color that shined black but with his age streaks of white now hid in it. His eyes were green and glowed with life. If it weren't for the rumours I would mistake him for a prince.
"Your majesty," I said as I held the corners of my skirt out and curtsied.
"Ah, my lady please stand. You don't have to do that," he said with a smile.
"Yes, your majesty," I said as I stood straight again, releasing my skirt.
"My memory is failing me today, please do refresh it and remind me what your name is."
My jaw almost dropped as he said this. How could he say something like this and be so nonchalant about it? "My name is Lady Natasha, my lord."
"Lady Natasha. I don't remember that name..."
"It's okay my lord. As you said your memory is failing you today and aside from that not many people do remember me," I said with a hint of sadness in my voice.
"Oh. Yes, yes. That's why. My memory," the king trailed off as ge began to mutter to himself.
"Is there anything you would like to discuss with me, my lord?" I asked when his mumbling ceased.
"I, uh, I-I-I... Er... I don't know," the king stuttered. His memory what failing him miserably.
"Father, if you have nothing to discuss then I will take Lady Natasha to her room," the prince said as he barged into the room with the guards dead on his tail.
"Prince Bear! This meeting isn't for you ears to hear or your eyes to see!" One of the guards yelled at the prince.
"Bear cone here," the king spoke as he stood from his seat. Bear slowly made his way down down the carpet, all the while his eyes were locked on me.
"Yes father, my lord?"
"If you ever interrupt another one of my private meeting ever again you will be lashed and put on in shackles for the public to mock or I may just have to have you publicly beheaded " I gasped at the king's cruelty toward his own son but Bear just laughed.
"Oh, father. You use that threat every time. Do you think it scares me?"
"Damn it!" The king swore in fake defeat.
"Father do not use such language in front of a lady." Bear fake teased his father some more after this.
"I'm going to retire to my chambers, son. I'm getting to old for this. Please show our guest to her room."
"Yes, father, my lord," Bear said as he bowed and I curtsied to the king.
Once the king was gone Bear turned to me with a devious smirk on his face...
