I whimpered as I saw Donald crippled on the ground, his broken limbs splayed in varying directions. For a second, I thought the worst.... Could he possibly be dead?
My question was answered not a moment later when he slowly and laboriously lifted up his head to face the girl.
"Bring it." He choked, blood dripping from his mouth and onto the floor.
I fought as hard as I could to free myself from the chains that bound me, ignoring the fresh cuts in my side.
"I'll spare you. On one condition." The girl giggled, holding the bloody chainsaw in her hands, examining it as if it was a piece of meat at the grocery store.
"If you give me the book, I'll let you both go."
"Why don't you just take it for yourself?" Donald wheezed. "Why bother to ask for it?"
She sighed. "Unfortunately, I need the permission of whoever currently holds the book to repossess it. You should probably do it, you know. For your own good."
"What are you going to do with it?"
"Give me the book."
"What are you going to DO with it?"
They were in a staredown, neither willing to break eye contact.
"Unless of course, Kella would like to give permission."
Donald frantically shook his head.
"No, Kella. No matter what, do NOT hand over that book. Will you swear that to me?"
I felt my eyes filling with tears.
"But I-"
"Kella." He said angrily. "PROMISE ME."
"I-" I choked on a sob. "I promise."
The girl's eyes flared.
"You will dearly regret that, Kella."
She revved on the chainsaw, making a swift hack at Donald's jaw. Blood sprayed everywhere, his jaw was hanging at cockeyed angle on his face. He buckled to the ground.
I screamed, sobbing so hard my body shook.
"No!! NOO!"
"The book." She grinned.
Donald was unconscious from the pain, but I promised him....
"No!" I sobbed.
She revved on the chainsaw again.
"NO! PLEASE! PLEASE! Please.." I whimpered like a child.
She sunk it down through his arm, sending a film of blood spraying onto my face.
Donald's eyes were open, but I could already see the light draining out of them. He was bleeding out, his disfigured jaw was preventing him from breathing.... I knew he wouldn't make it.
I crumpled, sobbing as I watched Donald struggling. There was nothing I could do.
"Kella." He choked, his words almost inaudible. "I- I love you."
Then, he was gone.
The girl laughed.
I watched motionless. He.... He couldn't.... Donald.... No.....
I had put him on all along.... I had let him think I loved him, I had let him die for a book.... What kind of person would ever do that?
But I knew the answer. I was the only one to blame for Donald's death. It was all my fault he was gone.
I slumped, the handcuffs and chains cutting my wrists.
"Ready to hand over the book?" She smiled.
What did I have to lose? Everything and everyone I had is gone. So I said what I could say.
"Yes."
