Chapter 2
Carlyle folded the letter neatly and tied it to the pigeon's leg. He picked it up and opened his window and released it into the air.
"You have taken things rather seriously my friend," Ramsy said suddenly from behind.
Carlyle turned around sharply and exhaled.
"Must have thought that I were his mother," Ramsy joked to himself with a smile. "Are you that afraid of your mother?" he added crossing his arms over his chest.
"Mama would forbid my actions," Carlyle answered rather annoyed.
"Aye, it would be so, and the baron will be displeased as well," Ramsy agreed.
"Have you come here Ramsy to mock me out of my foolish behavior?" Carlyle asked irritated.
"Nay my lord, my apologies. The baron has instructed me to call you to the Church for unsaid reasons," he replied.
"Very well then."
Cassandra stepped out on to her balcony and looked over at Wellington with a smile. She closed her eyes and breathed in the cold autumn air. She exhaled, relaxing herself and a smile made its way on her face.
She heard the pigeon coos and her eyes opened and looked down at the pigeon that kept craning its neck.
"Why hello there," she said softly as she slowly lifted the bird to her chest and found a rolled paper attached to its feet.
She took the tied letter carefully off its feet before placing it inside the bronze cage in her room.
She unrolled the small letter and read,
My dearest Cassandra,
No words could express the joy I felt upon seeing you again. You have become ever beautiful that the sunrise could not compare to your beauty. Your smile makes every star in the sky run out of shine.
My lady, I wish to express that there was never a day that I have not thought of you, and wished to meet you again. I have acknowledged the idea Ramsy has proposed to me, that what I feel for you is something more than the friendship we share.
My heart yearns for your love as my soul yearns for you.
To you, with love,
Carlyle
Her heart pounded hard against her chest as she read the letter. She have now come into terms that he loves her as she loves him.
She took out a small piece of parchment paper and dipped her quil into the ink bottle and started writing her letter.
My dearest Carlyle,
I have long awaited to meet you again. I have been dreaming of you and wished to finally see you that my troubled soul would be at peace of such worry. I have acknowledge that destiny has played its role for us to meet again and that I may know your thoughts of me.
I have come into countenance that my heart yearns for your love as well, and with that, I give my petition of courtship. But sadly, I make this petition a secret, for I am very much afraid of the things Mama could do to you, to your family and to your people.
With all my love,
Cassandra
She rolled the paper neatly and securely tied it around the pigeon's leg. She took it out of its cage and stepped outside her terrace releasing the pigeon into the air.
Carlyle stepped in the old bricked church and paced his way towards the altar, where the baron and the priest were talking, along side with another baron.
"Pardon me, but you called for me father?" Carlyle asked with a bow.
"Ah yes, Lord Ralph of Whells this is my son Carlyle," Lord William said with a smile as he gestured Lord Ralph towards Carlyle.
"A very fine lad he is, a pleasure meeting you," Lord Ralph said and extended his hand out to Carlyle.
Carlyle shook it with a straight face, he didn't like where this is going.
"Not to be rude my lord, but may I ask of the reason of your visit?" Carlyle asked in a rather firm tone.
"Cheer up lad, I only came here to ask your father if he, and of course, you, would come into terms in marrying my daughter," Lord Ralph said with a smile.
Carlyle froze. Marry? He wasn't planning on marrying anybody else except Cassandra.
"Dear boy, what seems to be the matter, are you faint? You look pale," Lord Ralph suddenly asked.
Carlyle shook his head lightly and cleared his throat. "Unfortunately my lord, I have not placed in my mind to marry yet for I still have to take charge over my father's rule soon," Carlyle said.
"Don't be bothered about Wolderford my son," Lord William said as he placed a hand over his shoulder.
"I see. A very clever and honorable young man," Lord Ralph said with a smile. "I respect your words lad, but I must hear your finally decision on the fortnight," he added.
Carlyle nodded in reply.
Ramsy was waiting for him outside the church, and quickly made his way to his side when he saw Carlyle went down the church's stairs.
"What must be so important that I could not know?" Ramsy asked curiously.
"A marriage," Carlyle replied irritated as he walked towards his horse.
"A marriage?" Ramsy exclaimed. "To whom have they thought of betrothing you?" he added.
"To Lord Ralph of Whells' daughter. I have not met her nor have heard of her, but Lord Ralph is a very wealthy baron. Having tied vows could be a great deal of help to Wellington."
"Have you made your decision?"
"Aye, but the lord still waits for my final decision by the fortnight," he said and mounted his horse.
"Would you be accepting the marriage?" Ramsy asked worriedly.
"Nay my friend," Carlyle said shaking his head lightly. "I could not betray the love I have for Cassandra, but my father would be very vexed with my decision," he added.
Ramsy mounted his horse and patted Carlyle's shoulder then smiled. Carlyle nodded in returned and nudged his horse forward.
