Chapter 13

"Cassandra?" the duchess said as she knocked on her bedroom door. "Cassandra." Her tone more firmer and louder than before. "Cassandra. Open the door this instant," she demanded.

There was still no answer.

"You," she pointed to one maid servant. "Fetch me the keys," she ordered.

"Yes my lady," she replied as she made a slight bow, then strode off.

"Cassandra," the duchess called out again, now slightly banging the door. She was becoming more and more impatient.

Cassandra was out in the back rose garden. She had received urgent news from her uncle, the prince wanted to meet with her. Her heart leaped, she couldn't contain her joy. She was expecting good news.

"Lady Cassandra?" she heard a voice from behind.

She turned around. "Your majesty," she said with a slight curtsey.

James approached her. "Please sit," he gestured her to sit on the stone seat.

"I am very truly sorry, but I bring ye bad news," he said in worried tone.

Cassie's heart sank. "What seems to be the problem your majesty?" she asked impatiently.

"My mother, the queen, has agreed to push through this marriage. I could no longer persuade her to think otherwise of this decision. Last night, we have received urgent letter from your mother, she has decided to move our wedding ceremony five days from now."

With each word James uttered, her heart slowly sank. She couldn't believe it.

"Hath my mother told ye the reason for such urgency? There must be . . . it seems to be happening so fast." What were the reasons? Did her mother already know of something?

"I do not know my lady, my mother had not told me of any reason of the sort, but hath agreed earnestly."

"Oh no, what shall we do? I must tell my uncle," she said worriedly and stood up. "If you will excuse me your highness." She made a slight bow, gathered some of her front skirt and ran.

His blue eyes followed her. Her bouncing golden locks and her slender back, slowly disappearing. He felt both happy and sad at the same time.

Cassandra continued running as she reached the stairwell, when she saw his uncle.

"Uncle," she said out of breath. "We have a problem. It's . . . about the wedding . . .

"My lady, before anything else. Hurry to your room. Your mother has ordered one of her maid servants to fetch the keys. She might thine letters," Gordon urged her.
