When I awoke I heard someone crying. I didn't open my eyes though, I was too afraid to see what was going on. I heard a voice say something to me while I was laying there pretending to be sleeping.

"Please, please, wake up. I love you," the voice said. It sounded like Reid. I decided to finally open my eyes to see if I was right. I saw Reid's tear stained face looking at me.

"Reid?" I whispered.

"Oh my gosh, you're finally awake."

"Where am I?"

"Your home. I brought you here. Nobody has come home yet. Where is your family?"

"I can't tell you."

"Yes, you can. Come on."

"Fine," I hesitated, "You know my family's split up?"

"Okay.." Reid said, waiting for me to continue.

"My mother took my brothers to go see my father."

"Why didn't she take you? Aren't there any relatives who can come to live with you while they're away?"

"She didn't take me because she didn't want to. She never does. My mom's friend, Will, is here.. he's just out for now. He'll come back."

"Are you sure?"

"Of course I'm sure.."

I avoided making any contact with him. It was a thing that I had when I either liked someone a lot or I was uncomfortable. I never made eye contact. Then, Reid did something unexpected. He leaned forward and hugged me. All I could do was hug him back.

"I'm so glad you're alive," he whispered. I wasn't sure why he was acting like this.

"Thank you for being concerned about me, but why exactly do you care?" I asked pulling away from him, unsure of what his reaction would be. He looked at me, seeming to be uncertain of how he should answer.

"I care about you, Desiree. I know you've been through a lot and I just want you to know that I'll always be here for you whenever you want to talk."

"Thanks.. Hold on, you're not just saying that because you pity me, right?"

"I don't pity you. I just want to let you know that I care about you. That's all."

"Okay, then thank you," I said, still unsure if he was doing this because he felt sorry for me. He nodded at me as if saying 'your welcome'.

"Can I ask you something?" Reid asked.

"You just did," I said smiling at him.

"Don't be a smart ass," he said laughing.

"Fine, go ahead and ask another question," I said still smiling at him.

"Why did you try to kill yourself?" he asked, no longer laughing.

"I thought you didn't care anymore," I whispered, afraid of his reaction. I felt stupid for ever thinking he didn't care about me. It became clear to me that he hadn't given up on me yet.

"No, why would you think that? That's crazy!" he said, taking my hand in his. Neither of us thought twice about it. We acted as if it was natural.

"I'm sorry," I said softly. He held my face in his hands, then leaned in and kissed me softly on the lips. I know it was wrong, but it just felt so right. We pulled away from each other and sat there awkwardly in silence. The engine of a car pulling into the driveway broke the silence.

"Sounds like Will's home. I'd better get going. Take care," Reid said as he left the house. I looked out the window and watched him explain to Will what had happened. Will just nodded and continued to casually stroll into the house, not looking worried at all. I think that's when Reid finally realized the cold-hearted bitches I said I lived with were not being exaggerated or made up. He shook his head at Will and walked to his vehicle then drove away. Will walked into the house smelling of alcohol, cigarettes, and whores.

"Can't you come home at least one day without smelling of alcohol, cigarettes, or whores?" I asked him in disgust.

"No. I need beer and sex to survive. You might want to consider doing the same, miss grouchy," he said, his words slurred. I hated when he came home drunk and smelly. I began to storm off to my room when he grabbed me by the wrist.

"Who was that man?"

"Didn't he tell you? He's my teacher. He brought me home after I had an injury."

"Are you using protection?"

"What the fuck?" I asked, unable to believe that he just asked me that. I snapped my wrist away and continued to storm off to my room. Like I said, I hated when he was drunk. I locked my door, not wanting him to do anything to me. It turned out the Reid put his number into my phone so I set him to speed dial, just in case something happened. I sat down on my bed with a book in hand and begun to read. Not even 5 pages in, Will started pounding on my door. I closed my book and set it down on my side table as I quietly got up. I pulled out my phone and dialed Reid's number, ready to hit the call button. I walked over to my closet and hid in it, knowing he would have that door down in no time. He busted my door down and called my name asking where I was. I hit the call button on my phone. Will whipped open the closet door and said, "Boo. I found you."

He dragged me out into my room and shut the blinds. I dropped my phone on the floor and started screaming. Will slapped me across the face with great strength which caused me to stop screaming. He picked me up, tossed me on my bed and climbed on top of me.

"Please, stop!" I yelled. Suddenly, I heard someone come racing into the house and then came racing into my room. It was Reid. He ripped Will off me and punched him in the face, knocking him down to the ground. Reid pulled out his phone and called the police, informing them of the situation. Will sat on the floor rubbing his face. I got up off the bed and sighed with relief. The police came storming in not too much longer and took Will away, leaving Reid and I alone.

"Thank you," I whispered.

"It was really no problem. Does he usually do this to you when your family goes away?"

I nodded slightly, avoiding eye contact as a tear trickled down my face. I wasn't able to bottle up my feelings anymore; I started sobbing uncontrollably. Reid hugged me and held me until I had stopped crying.

"I promise you, nothing like this will ever happen again. I won't let it. I'll always keep you safe," Reid said, looking me directly in the eye. I smiled at him. Nobody had ever said anything like that before. I was glad somebody cared about me. Somehow I knew he wasn't lying when he said he would always keep me safe. I don't know why; I guess it was just a gut feeling I had.
