Chapter 9

57 9 4

After falling into a terrified sleep, I had nightmares. Nightmares about creatures leaping into my gilded cage and gathering all around. Eyes glowing, mouths open, teeth covered in blood and saliva... Waking up in a cold sweat, I saw the sunrise for the first time wherever here is.

Colors bleed across the sky. It's as if someone divided the sky into 4, and chose a separate season for each part of the sunrise. A straight blue and yellow for where I am, the gold place, a silvery blue and purple for the silver place, a warm red orange and pink for the bronze, and almost a full spectrum of sunrise colors for spring. Staring at it, I couldn't focus on anything else.

A woman appeared as a shadow silhouetted in the sunrise. From my perspective, pressed up against the gold trees, she looks like she's appeared from the sunrise itself. As she gets closer, I can start to see her better.

A dress of red and cream (link above) hugs her waist and flares out at the elbows. A collar encircles her neck, and her hair is twisted up in a complicated braid/bun combination. The braid starts at her left temple, and uses slowly adds in the rest of her hair. Then, it's tucked into a bun. The funny thing is, her auburn hair is silver at the tips. A single strand is left out, and it is curled tightly, barely touching her shoulder.

The regal woman approaches with posture that could support a stack of 20 books, and eyes that could freeze anyone where they stood. With my mustard yellow leggings and russet red knit tunic, not to mention the gold manacle attached to my left ankle, I feel vastly inferior. I don't even want to think about my hair, a mane on the best days.

I realize I'm still pressed with my cheek against the rough gold tree bark. I take a step back, but I can't take my eyes off her. She stops just outside my cage.

"Human. Do you know why you're here?" She asks, her voice grinding me into the dirt. Human. What's she?

"N-n-no." I say. I stutter, knowing full well I sound like an idiot. Just talk straight!

"You will undergo experiments for me. As will the other 3. I expect you to fully cooperate." She says, her voice leaving me no room to say anything but,

"Yes madam." I hate myself for that. She's obviously not looking out for me. Experiments? Who are the others? I knew that Autumn was here, which means Wren probably is too. So that leaves only 1. Who is it?

The lady- I realized I still didn't know her name- left. Minuscule steps, small enough that a baby would have no trouble taking. Looking at her, I doubted she had ever walked a baby around the room. She's too beautiful. Besides, even if she had children, I didn't doubt she had someone else take care of them.

As soon as she was suitably out of sight, I sank to my knees.
