Life had gone by like normal for Lacy even though her parents were not together anymore. Lacy missed her dad and really did not like going to see him only every third weekend. She wanted to see him more often but new it was going to be hard with having to deal with homework and friends and such. Lacy gave her dad a call.
"-Hey dad."
"Hey Lacy darling, how are you? How are things?"
"-Things really suck I miss you. Can't you come up here to visit?"
"I know sweetie, I am sorry. I really am. I just... Things are not going well with your mother and I and they haven't been for a very long time."
"-Dad, what even happened between you and mom? She wont even talk about you or anything..."
"I did something very bad... and I don't regret it. You'll be old enough to understand one day honey."
"-Alright. well I love and miss you very much dad. and I really wish things would go back to how they were."
"I don't. I dreaded living with that woman for a while now. It was about time it ended."
"-Dad! How could you say that?!"
"I'm sorry honey. I have to go. Work is calling. Good bye love, I love you."
"I love you too dad."
Lacy wanted to cry after that phone call, but she didn't. A little while later, Lacy finished doing her homework and ate some dinner before the door bell rings. She goes to answer it.
"Hello Lacy, I am Officer Luke, and this is Officer Burnet. Is your mother home?"
The second officer asks with a serious face. Tears came to Lacy's eyes. What were they doing at her door? Lacy's Mother came around the corner.
"Hello Gentlemen officers."
Lacy's mother had no smile on her face. She stood behind Lacy with her arms crossed.
"Ma'am, We have come to inform you that your husband-"
"-Ex"
"Ex husband is dead. He died in a car crash on his way to the office."
Lacy was heart broken. Lacy turned to look at her mother and noticed she had no expression on her face at all... It was as if her mother didn't seem to care much. Lacy ran crying to her room. Marie did not bother Lacy but rather baked her a batch of cookies. Marie also went into Lacy's room and cleaned up, doing her laundry, and making her bed. Marie tucked Lacy into bed and kissed her forehead. That was the most contact Lacy had with her mom in years.
Lacy cried and cried for days about her father. Her mother made funeral arrangements but did not attend. Lacy attended by herself, and took her mom not attending as her moms way of grieving. She never did understand why her mom was the way she was.
A year and a half went by. Lacy graduated high school. Even though Lacy lived with her mom, she still felt alone. Her mom took up late night drinking and started becoming a mess. Marie slowly gave up helping charities and homeless people. Lacy did not want to have to give up everything she worked for to take care of her mother so she left her be. Lacy loved her mother, but she knew that there was no help for her. Lacy watched as her mom fell and hoped things would turn around.
One day Lacy got a call from a man named Tom. He was her fathers friend. Lacy was relieved he had friends. She missed her dad so much. Tom had explained that he had no idea John had a family. After more than three hours on the phone explaining everything she had to deal with, including watching her mother throw away her life, Lacy and Tom hung up. Tom would be coming over the very next day.
