Annabelle
"So Ana, how are you feeling?" Asks Hayley. Sometimes I call her Halo in my mind, because she's always smiling like an angel with a halo on her head.
She's too perfect.
"I'm feeling great Dr. Haley." I say with a proud smile. If I want to be released I'll have to seem entirely better. I know I'm better.
"Is that so?" She asks, still with that reassuring smile on her face. She's gripping onto her clip board with a pen in her lap.
"Yes."
"Okay then. We're just going to take a little weight test okay?" She stands up and signals me to follow over to the side of the room near the window. I follow in suit.
I step on the scale as she looks into the calculations.
80 pounds.
This takes her by surprise, because it's actually higher. I feel a smug comfort to the books strapped behind my back under my sweater and to the metal insoles I have under my heels in my shoes.
"This is an improvement. A great improvement in deed." She says with a plastered smile on her face. She jots a few things into the clip board and walks back to her desk, I follow and sit back into my seat.
"So you've been eating all three meals a day?" She asks.
"Yes I have." I respond with the best smile I could form.
"Have you been eating the snacks I've been telling you to?"
"Yes I have. Sandwiches after lunch and dinner, and dessert as always." I say.
She nods her head in response as she writes notes down into her clip board. I fiddle with my fingers, hoping everything will turn out fine and I'll be able to go back home. I hate this place.
"Okay Ana, you've improved a lot. But you're still underweight. You'll have to put on a few more pounds, our goal is 90."
I gulp at the number.
"Then if you can achieve that, we could try for 100 because your body mass index implies that's how much you're supposed to weigh at this height and age."
I look down to my palms that have now grown sweaty. I weigh myself everyday and I'm only 76 pounds. With the help of these books and insoles I've managed to add on only 4. How could I get to 90?
"I'm very proud of you Ana, keep fighting and you'll be home before you know it." She says with a gleeful smile. I smile in return and thank her as I get up and leave.
Once I'm out of the office, I let out a breath I realized I've been holding for the longest time.
