Chapter 2 - Stares

I immediately felt the stares as I walked into class. They felt familiar. I recognize them from last year. The stares. The eyes burning holes into my flesh to be able to judge me better. Of course, I expected them. I knew the minute I walked through the front doors that I would be judged. Simply because I was new. We all first determine whether we like something new or not simply by staring at it. We determine if it's beautiful or ugly. Smart or dumb. Popular or lame. We all do it. Some people are just more obvious and honest about it than others.
Anyways, I knew what to do about the stares. Ignore them. I simply walked to my desk and ignored them. I still felt them. I let 5 minutes pass by. Still I felt them. I knew I would have to start staring back. I looked around for prey. My eyes landed on this one girl. Knee length shorts. Pink t-shirt. HUGE glasses and really curly hair. She was staring at me, so I just stared back. People were looking between us, seeing who would win. Finally, she turned away. Looks like I win.
The teacher started calling role. When she said my name, I again got stares, but this time they went away quickly. "Jenika", The teacher called. "Here", a small voice in the back said. I turned around. It was the girl I had a staring match with. Now everyone was staring at her. I felt bad. She was obviously new as well, otherwise there would be less stares. I decided to try to be nice to her later. Maybe we could be friends. Yea right, said the voice in my head, she would never be friends with you. You're too ugly.
But for once, I felt that the voice was wrong this time...
