When Night Falls

Chapter 7: Lone Wolf

  Tony had told everyone about my nightmares, and that I was Bryce's target. I was to be protected at all cost. This was after he sorted out the fight. Kerry, the girl who started it, and her boyfriend Harris were scolded for being so rude and accusing. "That is not how we treat family", Tony had reprimanded.

  Dallas and I had made up and more. Let's just say I found out how good of a kisser he really was. We even went out on a few dates. I never thought he would be so romantic. Dallas also assured me that I was the only girl he wanted.

  My training had finally started and I was doing well. I could even take on some of the guys. My pack mates were surprised at my strength and skills. Even I was surprised.

  While things were looking good for my pack life all was not well at home. I was barely around my family much. When I am home I usually stay cooped up in my room or go walking. Even Bruiser and Marley seemed to notice my change in personality. Evelyn had performed in a play that I had not been able to attend, because of training and pack business.

  I had recalled the night Reese, my dad, and I had been watching a nature documentary in the living room. It had been about how wolves hunt. "Look at them! They're chasing that baby deer!" Reese had said dramatically. "Wolves are nothing more than killers, monsters. How can they hurt that baby deer?"

  Those comments had hurt more than I expected them to. "It's the circle of life", I said defensively, "They're not doing anything wrong." She gaped at me, "I thought you were an animal lover!" "Wolves are animals", I countered. "They have to survive too", Dad joined the conversation. He had always been an equalizer, and even if he didn't know he was standing up for me I was grateful.

  "But if I ever seen one of those in real life we'd have a wolf's head mounted on our wall." He laughed. That stung, and if I had ever had any doubt that my family would never accept me for what I was it was just squashed. They wouldn't love me if they knew the truth. I was an outcast, a lone wolf.

  Bridgett and I had stopped talking. It killed me to let go of her, my best friend. Sometimes I would go for a nightly run to clear my mind, and would stop by her house. I would peek into her window and see that she was asleep. I would also see my reflection, a giant wolf. It did give me some comfort to know that she was safe.

  I sat alone on a bench outside of school as the November breeze stirred my hair. His scent hit me before I seen him. "Hey", Dallas smiled as he walked towards me. "Hey", I grinned back. "What are you doing out here all alone?" My mate said nuzzling his face into my dirty blonde hair. "Mmh, just thinking", I murmured.

  "About?" He asked. "Everything", I replied distantly. Dallas pulled me onto his lap. "I don't know what it's like to have human family. I don't know what you're going through, but Cillian you are my mate. I can feel everything you feel, and I know you are depressed." He said tenderly. I glanced up at him. "You're right, I'm not alone. I need to snap out of this and focus on figuring out these dreams so that things can go back to normal." I admitted.

  "Normal is overrated", Dallas said with a sloppy grin, "but that's the spirit." I leaned in close to his ear and whispered, "How did I end up with such an incredible boyfriend?" I could feel goose bumps prickling his skin. "You're a little fox, know that?" He breathed before crushing his lips to mine. I allowed him to cradle me as my lips parted ever so slightly.

  Before our kiss got any further we heard footsteps and broke apart quickly. Ben stood a few feet away. "Uh yeah, I was just... Sorry" He fumbled with his words. Give us a second? I asked Dallas. He nodded and walked off, eyeing Bennett carefully.
