Chapter 20: Relationships?

John's P.O.V.

"We have so much to talk about!" Ayako was saying, leading Mai over to the couch with the rest following.

"Yes, yes. I know, but you know guys... I gotta blast in..." Mai stopped to glance at the clock. "About 2 hours...?" Grimacing, she looked at Gene.

He shrugged. "But on the other hand, we'll be back after we finish our business. Our apartment is not too far from here."

"Yes, that's fine as long as Mai -"

"APARTMENT?! YOU AND MAI?! SHARING?! ONE?!" Monk's expression was one of great terror. "MY DAUGHTER. NO."

I thought she still loved her narcissistic boss... Even if he is no where in sight.

Mai laughs nervously after exchanging a look with Masako. "No, no, no. How do you think our great boss would feel if he thought I was living with his brother?"

Well, we all knew how Oliver would react. He'd probably go and kill his own brother for living in the same area as Mai, let alone the same house. But, none of us would dare say it aloud.

I took the sudden silence as an opportunity. "So Mai. Any relationships your family should know about?" *wink, wink*

Gene and Monk seemed to burn holes through my head, but I ignored them. If Mai had a boyfriend, it would upset the balance of nature here at SPR. Weird as it sounds, it would.

Flushing, she replied. "Naw. Although..." Mai averted her eyes suspiciously.

Ayako raised her eyebrows. "Although?"

Giggling, Mai said, "Well there's no use hiding it. There was a really cute guy at the lake earlier today. He didn't notice me of course, but man was he sexy! He even had a purdy pink poodle! Very sexy indeed!"

All of us burst laughing. She was kidding, obviously, but Gene still seemed to be jealous.

Hm...

"So what did I miss? No pairings or newfound romance while I was gone?"

"Well..." Yasuhara starts. I forgot he was here, I mean he's been quiet this whole time! Weird, h- "Ayako and Monk are currently dating..." They beamed. "Masako and John are a work in progress..." I blushed, the rest of the crew were attempting to get me to admit any feelings for Masako. But I knew she would just ignore me, she still has feelings for Naru-chan. "And I..."

Yasu looked away.

"Yesss?" Mai pressed on.

"I talked to a beautiful lady yesterday at the drama theatre! She was very gorgeous, in nice shape, had an alluring attitude, and simply loves drama! A match made in Heaven!" Yasu's nose began to bleed, and he sat in the corner trying to stop it, still fangirling. Or - fanboying.

The weird thought made me laugh.

We all continued to talk about different things, trying to occupy Mai in the two hours she had left to stay.

Mai's P.O.V.

Gene and I rode to the private hospital in silence. Tonight would be my first attempt in waking his brother. Hopefully, I wouldn't need another day to try. It was all blurring so fast. Almost unreal. Who would've dreamed that the great Naru - Oliver - Kazuya would be in need of my help? I snort. No one, that's who. But him and his family need me, and I was never one to turn anyone down. For better or for worse.

As we rolled into a parking space, Gene broke the silence.

"Mai... I really appreciate you helping us out with this. And even though my parents don't say it much, they do too."

I smiled. "I know, Gene."

"Just making sure. And, if you do bring him back here, I just hope it doesn't make anything awkward between any of us..."

What? "What do you mean?"

"I mean, our whole group is caught in a huge love web. And you're at the center of it, whether you know it or not. I just want to make sure we all know what's best for us. Including me and you."

"Me and you. Me and you... Oh no, Gene. I don't think I like you lik-" He placed a finger on my lips.

"We'll see. I don't know what I feel either, Mai. But I don't think I can take it lightly." He started to lean in, and I got all nervous inside. I mean, yeah whenever Naru would tease me or anything, I would get intense butterflies in my stomach, but this... This was a softer tingling that lightly spread throughout my body.

He held his lips against mine for a good 10 seconds until he pulled away and looked into my eyes. "Mai, I believe in you. Now please, go save my brother."

As I processed what just happened, I nodded numbly, opened the car door, and headed to the entrance of the hospital. Just before I stepped inside, I turned around and waved goodbye to Gene as he pulled away.

He waved back.
