That late afternoon, the guys came over for band practise.
Michael was in a band, and the band was made up of 4 people.
Luke was the front man, and he was the tallest of the guys, yet also the youngest. He was blue eyed with blonde hair, usually flat and swept to the side. He was in year 10, with Calum.
Cal was more mellow, and shy. He had dark brown hair and was very tanned. I had the least in common with Calum, but I still looked up to him a lot. I knew that if I needed anything from him, just like any of the others, he would be there for me.
Ashton was the eldest in the band, being a couple years older than the others. he had curly brown hair and he always had this genuine expression on his face. He would always act the wisest.
I loved Michael's band, they liked having me around, or at least they tolerated me being around.
We were pretty much always home alone, Michael and I. Therefore band practise pretty much always happened at our place. We had the biggest garage out of everyone too, so that's where they practised.
We were home alone because our parents would always be working late, or be on a business trip. They had two homes, one here in Sydney and a camping lodge out in the wilderness. They'd go to the lodge most weekends, but me and Michael wouldn't because it wasn't big enough to accommodate all four of us- our parents weren't at all rich.
Currently our parents were just working and they'd be back tonight.
Calum and Luke arrived together and dumped their backpacks on the sofa in the living room. Me and Michael had made the room into a mass of pillows, cushions and duvets. More often than not, whenever the band had a jam session, the guys slept over that night and the next morning they'd play video games until about midday when they left.
Calum didn't really say anything to me, only giving me a small curt nod. On the other hand Luke came over and gave me a massive hug, lifting me off the ground and spinning me round.
"How ya doing lil duck?" He asked me, face buried in my hair.
I giggled, mumbling a short "I'm okay.".
He put me down and smiled at me, then he went into the kitchen to get a drink with Calum.
Ashton would turn up late, he always does. He lives further away. He would have to ride his pushbike to our house for band practise, because walking would take him ages.
The guys went on ahead to the garage and started tuning their guitars, waiting for Ash to turn up.
I went to go and start on my homework, deciding to join the guys later. I didn't want to bother them with my constant presence, I felt too much of a burden. So, I went up to my bedroom and played some Blink-182 quietly and got on with my homework that I would probably fail anyway.
I struggled with my chemistry homework and then I just got frustrated with the maths work that I tried to catch up on from today. But the memories of my stupidity from the lesson worked me up and I just broke down in tears instead.
I wasn't smart enough at maths. I could keep up with all of my other subjects just about, but when it came to maths I'd fail everything and it was so frustrating to know that I couldn't improve no matter how hard I tried.
I had just started year 7, which is the first year in secondary school. It was almost time for our first parents evening, and I was terrified. This would be the first time that my parents would see how badly I'm failing maths. They gave out reports every month to keep parents updated, but mine would always get 'lost' in my school bag, when in actual fact it would be either burnt or shredded before the envelope was even opened.
