"But before the boy's body could hit the floor,
A gale of wind blew through the door.
His caretaker human no more."We used to live in this manor as humans.
He was my caretaker and my best friend.~*~*~*~
Shivering, Alice nudged the cupboard door open and peeked out. All she saw was the wrecked kitchen - and some skeletal teeth that had been torn out in a rage.
She was scared and confused. The musty kitchen was bare. There was a trail of destruction that expanded towards the hall.
Was Coryn okay? Where had he gone?
He'd told her to hide - but he'd never said anything about leaving the kitchen.
All of a sudden, a tremor shook the kitchen with unrestrained violence. It spanned for a petrifying twenty seconds, in which time several of the broken floor tiles jumped and smacked against each other.
Alice shot out of the cupboard once it was over, too scared to stay there for much longer. Her lips hurt. And they felt swollen. She wanted to put balm on it.
She wanted to find Coryn again.
~*~*~*~
Something bad happened on Halloween night.
A bad man came through the window.~*~*~*~
The rabbit plush looked sad. It drooped halfway out of the cupboard, abandoned by the warm little hands that had held it so tightly moments ago.
~*~*~*~
He had a big axe.
Wanted what we didn't have.~*~*~*~
Alice tiptoed her way to the staircase, looking around with big suprised eyes.
So much destruction. So much damage. The manor was weeping for its losses, shaking and sobbing at random intervals. It was a strange sobbing. Sounded like an animal screeching.
Nevertheless, she was feeling brave.
So Alice took the first step, followed by another and another. Her stride grew with confidence, faster and faster until she raced with the speed of a fleeing cheetah.
Little did she know - her feet would never touch those stairs again.
~*~*~*~
My friend told him that,
We had no gold.
He didn't like that.~*~*~*~
He was startled by a flash of lightning. It went off like a gunshot; banging in his ears so loudly that it gave him a headache.
Coryn kept on climbing, one step after the other. His progress was slow - hindered by the lashings of icy rain and cold wind.
Getting a sickness from exposure to the elements was the least of his worries. All the same, he was dismayed to break out into a fit of numb sneezing.
He could see the sky above his head. Blacker than the ink of a poet's quill. His robotic eye analysed the patterns and informed him that it was thirty minutes into midnight.
With any blessing of luck, they'd make it through the other half unscathed. As long as Alice kept put in her hiding place and Trick... Stayed wherever the hell he was.
