Chapter 12

Vic POV

I checked the time on my phone, after having laid there for who knows how long. 3:24 a.m. No sleep. I poked my head out of my bunk to see if Jaime was awake. Maybe he could make me feel better.

"Jaime?" I whispered across the tiny hall. I heard a slight groan come from his bunk.

"Jaime, are you awake?" I asked quietly, just above a whisper. He slowly poked his head out of his bunk like a turtle creeping out of it's shell.

"Can we talk? I need a friend right now." He nodded, practically crawled out of his bunk, & led me over to the small couch, plopping us down.

"What is it, man?" He asked tiredly, rubbing his eyes. He hadn't bothered to put a shirt on, so he was sitting there in nothing but some flannel pants.

"I'm worried about Kell. Like, what if something bad happened?"

"Vic, dude, he's 27, I think he-"

"No, it's not that. I mean, what if things with Kate went worse than expected?" I could feel tears begin to well up, & I didn't want to cry in front of my best friend. "I'm sorry, bro, I'll be right back..." I said as I stood up & walked to the bathroom in the back of the bus, wiping my eyes.

"No problem, Vic, take your time." I heard him reply behind me.

Jaime POV

I felt terrible for Vic. He was a great guy & he definitely didn't deserve to feel this way. Just as I heard the bathroom door close, almost as if on cue, Vic's phone that he had left behind began to ring. I peeked over at it, as anyone would. It was Kellin. 'Don't answer, it's not your business,' I thought to myself. But of course, my curiosity got the better of me. I should've just let it ring.

"Kellin?"

"Vic! H-hey," he hiccuped, obviously drunken.

"N-no, kellin, this is-"

"Look man, I g-gotta tell you, uh, something. Uhm, I-we shouldn't like, be t-together, mkay?" He stuttered & slurred.

"W-what?" I asked in bewilderment. I couldn't believe my ears!

"Well, byyyyeee!" He giggled, sounding bubbly as could be as he hung up the phone. I could hear Vic moving around in the bathroom so I quickly tossed his phone back to it's original spot. When he came out, the look on my face must've given it away that something had happened in his absence.

"What's wrong, Jaime?" He asked, a look of concern striking his features. "Nothing," I lied, "I just think you should get some rest. You'll feel better tomorrow if you do, I promise." He nodded in agreement & climbed into his bunk. As I made my way back into mine, I heard his small voice pipe up once more.

"Jaime, thanks."

"For?" I asked, raising a brow at him.

"Being there for me. You could've ignored me & slept, but you didn't. Thanks."

"No problem, man," I said through a forced smile, "you're my best friend, it's my job to be there for you." With that, we snuggled into our bunks & tried to sleep. I think Vic may have finally slipped into a slumber, but I never did. I was too preoccupied with debating whether or not I should tell Vic what kellin had said. After all, he was drunk; I'm sure he didn't mean it.
