"Danger gleams like sunshine to any man or brave woman's eyes like a knife gleams in a mad one"
I don't know how long or how far I ran, maybe I was running in circles and I didn't know. I ran around the block twice before finding myself on a long road, stretching out into the lush farms.
My feet pounded down on the dusty road and my heart was beating so fast I thought it would make a tattoo on my chest. The sun beat down on my neck making my skin a brown with a tinge of pink.
My legs gave way and I collapsed on the road, tumbling off it and into the long thick grass. The green finger like weeds was almost pulling me out of sight into the soft soil. My breathes came out in labored, raspy gasps, dragging the air around me into my lungs.
The sun was setting now. I admired it with great concentration, taking every stroke of pink and pale gold tinges; breathing in the beauty of it into my lungs and filling my burnt and broken heart until it too, turned into the same colours. Until it grew flowers as long as the grass surrounding me. Until the embers that were full of harsh words turned the colour of snow and finally settled in my lungs.
I breathed in the beauty of it- until finally, it too, was beautiful.
I shuffle through the back door and onto the porch, my body seems to creak almost in sync with the door as I let it swing back into place. The sunset stains the sky and I sit on a wooden chair.
I flex my feet out in front of myself, the sun making them glow. I peer out into the horizon, the lawn a dark green now that the sun had sunken behind the hills.
Something was odd, the air was so thick and dense that you could quite possibly cut it with a knife. Danger. The lawn was pressed by unseen feet, the ghosts were gently returning. Their forms unseen.
I had no control over my body as I stood up, curiosity leading the way. Then the voices. They echoed in my skull, pain lashed out up my head sending me on the ground hugging it.
My breaths were ragged, almost like I was breathing through my teeth,
"I believe in ghosts. Do you?" It asked, "you look scared. Why? Because of me?" When I gave it no reply, it said, "Child do not be afraid. You are, after all, a ghost as well"
"How?" I cried out as the pain seeped into my spine, I gritted my teeth as it cackled.
"Your just a ghost, Bloody Mary." It laughed, "with a beating heart." It stopped and there was silence for a moment, "oh look at you...all frightened and vulnerable. Mayday. Mayday. This ships going down, and yourself as captain, your sure as hell going to drown. Are you ready?"
