Just a reminder the weird chapter names are lines of a poem (((o(*゚▽゚*)o)))

....

"Beauty begins the moment you decide to be yourself"

...

I awoke with a pounding headache after a dream about stormy seas. I glanced at the clock, Friday 5:24.

I groaned, I couldn't get back to sleep because my scar from the lightening strike hurt. I was lucky to be alive as the lightening strike tore through my skin leaving a tree root like scar down my back.

The blood pumped hard against my skin and my heartbeat was at a casual thump. I had slept funny, with my hand on my heart and lying on my stomach which lead to a cramped arm and pins and needles up my left leg.

But I could feel my heartbeat pumping hard against my chest and I managed to fall back asleep to the feel.

"Happy birthday!"

I peeled my eyes open to see two bright green eyes, sparkling, "mvorning..." I mumbled.

"Haaaapy birrrthday" Sydney sung, swinging a cake in front of my line of sight, "I made a cake!" She squealed.

I laughed at the cake. Nothing special. The cake was a chocolate brown covered in a thin layer of a white icing that dripped down the sides in a sickly way. The cake was plain with one glowing candle in the center.

Sydney was grinning from ear-to-ear as she drew the number seventeen into the icing with her pinky finger, "happy birthday, sis" she laughed, "happy?"

"Yeah" I sighed in content.

"Ok good, this cake tastes better than it looks!" Sydney twirled around while the cake almost fell on the wooden floorboards, "I got you a present!"

I had finally gotten up and decided to get dressed, "back in a tic"

I came out in a pair of shorts with the pockets poking out the bottom, a black jumper two-sizes-to-big for me (a hand and me downed from my sister) and slippers.

On the plus side Sydney was almost jumping up and down on the couch, holding my present she almost rammed me in the stomach running towards me.

"a gift" she said, I smiled taking it off her, "mum and dad would like you to have this"

I opened on end of the bright, red wrapping paper and slid out a red box. A necklace slid out into view when I opened the lid, it was a glass love heart with a bolt of electricity through the middle.

"A bolt of electricity, frozen." Sydney explained.

"How...what- that's" I stuttered.

"Impossible? Mum and dad did it" she continued, taking a deep breath she looked me dead in the eye, "there's...something I need to tell you"

She opened her mouth to say something, but closed it again. She did it again, "you look like a goldfish" I muttered

"Never mind." She replied, "but happy birthday!" She grinned

"Yeah, yeah, whatever" I paused and looked at Sydney.

She looked identical to mum. When she died I pained me to even make eye contact with her. Every time I looked at her, memories would flood my senses.

I gave her a half-hearted smile, "love you, sis"

"Great! Now that's done and over with...who wants cake?" She laughed, I excused myself and told her I had to be getting to school, "see ya then"

I gave her a curt nod and got ready, I stashed my books into my bag and set out the door.
