Hawkstar's (Quick Written) Places to go Near Sunset Beach, NC

1. Sunset Beach- Sunset beach is a beautiful beach. The current isn't too strong, and when the tide goes out it leaves pools of verying depths. Is you sit there long enough the minnows get bold and will come bother you. It's tons of fun. Right be the Pier is crowded, but if you go out a ways it becomes a little more open. Waves aren't too high, but the wind can be a killer sometimes.

A. Kindred Spirits- If you walk down along Sunset Beach in direction of the SC border, you'll come accross the Kindred Spirits mailbox on the right, marked by a flagpost. Open the mailbox, and feel free to write down your thoughts in one of the many notebooks that fill the mailbox. No one knows who started it, but people from all over the country write down their stories, thoughts, and feelings.

B. Bird Island- Bird Island is a state-owner protected land. It's beautiful. The waves are stronger there, so don't go too far out.

2. Nom Nom Noms-

A. Crabby Oddwaters- If you're looking for fresh, delicious seafood with a good view, go here. It's a bit on the expensve side, but it's totally worth it. The hush puppies are pretty good, but that's coming from someone who doesn't like hush puppies. All the food is fresh and there's a fish market down below. it's a big place, you can't miss it. Coming off the island, it's straight ahead.

B. Tony's Pizza- A small pizza place in Calabash. It you turn left at the light onto the street next to the massive Calibash Nautical Gifts (you can't miss it) and travel down the road maybe a quarter of a mile and it's on the right. It's a homey place with amazing pizza.

C. Mc Fibber's Pub (or something like that)- A pub with amazing food and a great atmosphere. Even if you're under the drinking limit (lol ooh ooh me me!) it's still great. Indoor and outdoor seating, but the flys can be slightly problematic outside.

D. How Sweet It Is- It's an ice cream and gift shop on the way to Calibash from the beach. On the left. The owner is is a sweet older woman by the name of Wanda. If you start up a conversation she's bound to chat with you. The place picks up around 9:45, so if you don't want to stand in a crowded room full of every kind of person imaginable go a little earlier. It's open 7 days a week.

E. Turtle Crossing Cupcakes- Yea, we like the little places. A new cupcake place, moved there in November. If you can get through the pepto-bismol pink paint and the feminine feel without losing your masculinity, the cupcakes are great. It's before Calibash Nautical gifts, next to the big always crowded ice cream shop.

3. Other Places to Visit

A. Calibash Nautical Gifts- A massive gift shop, you can't miss it. It takes up an entire Shopping Plaza basicly. It's insane, but carries your almost every need. Clothes, Novelty items, shells, anything beach themed, candles, fudge, toys, hermit crabs, jewlery, there's even a holiday shop. It's MASSIVE. And when I say that I mean it. There's just about everything for your holiday decoration needs. There's even a little Halloween section, in a sketchy little side room. But yea...

B. Tropical Adventure Mini Golf- If you need something to do outside of the beach, this is a great place to go. $8 a person, there's around 20ish holes. Grab a club and one of the many colored golf balls (colors: Red, Blue, Green, Purple, Black, and maybe Orange?) and go have fun. The simplistic design works with the landscape but creates a challenging and fun course. The owner works all the time and brings his dog Sadie, who's 11 this year. She's more of a "look but don't touch" dog now in her elderly years. The course is fun, but picks up quick so go early or you'll be waiting for the next hole.

4. That Other Other Place That Creeps People Out

China Panda- Oh the China Panda, what an innocent sounding name! Yea, if you're a mafia member. No one really knows what goes on in this place. It's been open 15 years and i've only seen a total of like 2 cars in the parking lot? We've asked a couple of the locals and they all feel the same. We're convinced it's a mafia hangout, and if we walk in a couple of italian guys are going to tell us "We fix you asian food, what-a flavor raman noodle you want?" So, if you're brave enough to try it out be my guest. I'm sure as heck not going in there.
