I checked the clock on my phone. They were both late, damn them. We were going to miss the film at this rate! I paced impatiently back and forth outside the glass doors of the cinema, whipping my head around to catch a glimpse of them. Finally, I saw Amelia coming round the corner at a fast trot, her handbag swinging wildly.
“Sorry, sorry, sorry!” she cried as she got closer. “My mum had to go into hospital again, so I had to organise a babysitter for my little brother.”
“Is she alright? Do you need to be with her?” I asked in concern. If her mum was ill, I didn’t want to be the one to keep them apart…
“No, no, it’s fine,” she said airily. “Just the standard battery of test, she forgot that she had an appointment, that’s all. Is John here yet?”
I shook my head mutely, not trusting myself to answer. Amelia looked at me kindly.
“I’m sure he likes you too, you know. From what you’ve told me about him, it sounds like he’s even more in love with you than you are with him.”
I grimaced and nodded slightly. She gave me a small smile, then pointed over at the road. John was getting out of a saloon car. He sprinted over to us, an apologetic grin on his face.
“Sorry I’m late guys, my mum insisted that she drive me here herself. Shall we go in?”
The boy on the ticket desk was barely older than us, and he had terrible acne scars. He handed us our tickets, and told us to hurry or they wouldn’t let us in for this showing. We half-ran to the screen, pausing only to get our tickets checked, skipping popcorn and drinks. The cinema was very dark compared to outside, and it took a moment for my eyes to get used to it. Amelia led us to the very top and plonked herself down on the middle seat. John and I sat either side of her. There were still a few adverts for upcoming films left, so she offered to pop out and get us refreshments. I asked for a Sprite and medium popcorn, John said he’d have the same. We both handed her a tenner each, and she made her way out.
After a moment I looked over a John. He was already staring at me, a slight smile on his face. He jerked his head in his direction. I raised an eyebrow and he grinned. His teeth were very white in the darkness. I rolled my eyes but relented and slid over a seat next to him. He made a small satisfied noise in his throat and slung an arm around my shoulders. I shrugged it off and put my own around his shoulders.
The film had just started when Amelia came back in, laden down with popcorn and drinks. She managed to get up the stairs without incident and handed each of us our snacks. I removed my arm from John’s shoulders to take my stuff. She’d got me sweet popcorn when I preferred salty, but what the hey? I was sat in the cinema next to John who seemed very interested in cuddling up to me.
The film was mostly ignored by all three of us. John and I kept glancing at each other, then looking away when we realised the other had seen. Amelia watched the whole thing with a knowing smile touching her lips. About half-way through, John placed a hand on my thigh. I jumped slightly, and he smirked, having got the reaction he wanted. I narrowed my eyes and clamped my hand over his crotch, squeezing gently. His eyes widened, the whites shining in the darkness. I chuckled darkly, and removed my hand, draping it back round his shoulders again, confident that I had won this round.
When the film was over and the lights came back on, John yawned and stretched, treating me to an enticing glimpse of his fuzzy treasure trail. I almost drooled. He smiled at me then got up.
“Just gonna go to the loo, OK?” he said, walking off.
I nodded and then turned to Amelia, whose eyes were flicking between the two of us, a smug grin spreading across her face like a layer of melting butter.
“What?” I said innocently.
She snorted. “Don’t ‘what?’ me, Dane Barkwater. I saw you grab his balls!”
“Not so loud!” I stage-whispered, motioning for her to contain her excitement.
“Pfft! Just snog the boy already. He clearly wants you. Any other guy would have punched your lights out for touching them like that, but he practically had an orgasm!”
I glared at her. She did her eyebrow-raising trick, and I quailed under her gaze. Luckily, John returned at that point, saving me from the witch-stare.
“Hey, I just got a text from my mother. She said that my older brother’s gone down to London for the weekend end, and she’d really like a night alone with my dad.”
“We all know what that means,” I snorted, winking at Amelia.
“She said, could I ask you I you’d be OK with me staying the night?” he continued hesitantly, looking down at his feet as he spoke.
I gaped helplessly at him before turning to Amelia. She grinned evilly, a wicked glare lighting up her black eyes. ‘No!’ I mouthed furiously at her, shaking my head. She nodded and turned to John.
“He’d love for you to stay over, John. Wouldn’t you, Dane?” she said, sweet as poisoned honey. I glared at her, wishing she would just die.
“Really, Dane?” I turned back to John, who was looking at me with undisguised hope in his eyes.
“Er, I suppose. I mean, I’d have to clear it with my parents first…” I said carefully. He hugged me fiercely. “Thank you so much. You have no idea what my parents ‘nights alone’ are like. Sometimes, they don’t care if they’re actually alone or not.”
Amelia was rocking on her heels with silent laughter, tears streaming down her cheeks. John pulled away from me and frowned at her. “Are you okay?”
“Yeah, yeah… haha… sorry, it’s just my allergies,” she spluttered, wiping away the tears. She did an unconvincing fake sneeze and produced a tissue, blowing in to it like an elephant.
“Oh. Kay. Then,” he said, turning back to me.
I sighed, pulling out my phone. “Gimme a minute.”
Annoyingly, my parents seemed fine with idea. Well, my dad was a bit apprehensive, especially at such short notice, but my mum quickly beat him down.
“Where will he sleep?” she queried me excitedly.
“I guess in my bed,” I replied slowly. “I can sleep on the floor in a sleeping bag.”
“It’s settled then,” she said. “Call me when you two are almost home.”
She hung up, leaving me staring at the phone for a few seconds before I stuffed it back in my pocket in disgust. It looked like John was coming to stay the night.
