The next day dawned grey and wet. Condensation fogged the inside of my bedroom windows. I always felt worse on wet day – sunlight just made me feel happier. After my shower and getting dressed, I went downstairs to eat breakfast. Glancing at the digital clock on the microwave, I realised that I’d overslept, and I had about five minutes before the school bus got to my stop. Grabbing a piece of bread from the fridge, I slung my school bag over my shoulder and hurtled out the front door.
I sprinted round the corner of the road, and the bus was already at the stop.
“Wait!” I screamed. Tony stuck his head out of the doors. Thank God, he’d only just got on. He turned back in for a moment, to tell the bus driver I was coming, and then beckoned frantically at me. I did a James Bond-style leap through the double doors, crashing to the floor on top of Tony.
“Er, nice to see you too, Dane,” he said breathlessly. I pulled an innocent and clambered awkwardly to my feet, extending a hand to pull Tony up. I looked down the bus for a seat, only to see Amelia and her friend Mary giggling hysterically at us. I stuck my tongue out at them. I dumped my bag on the floor beside an empty seat and sat down.
“Have a nice… trip?!” snorted Mary, causing Amelia to fall off her seat, rocking with laughter. I kicked at her viciously, only pulling up at the last moment, satisfied to see her flinch.
“Have a nice set of A-level exams?” I retorted, knowing that they would shut up if I brought up exams. Amelia stopped laughing and glared daggers at me. I raised one eyebrow in a parody of her favourite sceptical facial expression.
“Dane, help me with my homework,” whined Tony, who had got a book spread over his lap.
“Why didn’t you do it last night? Although, to be fair, I didn’t do any last night either.”
“I was visiting my Nana,” he said innocently. I snorted.
“Yeah, sure. Was this ‘Nana’ of yours virtual and on your iPad?”
“No!” he snapped indignantly, and then a foolish grin crept on to his face. “Maybe.”
I sighed in exasperation. “Give it here.” I took the book from him and pulled out a pencil from my blazer pocket.
About five minutes later, I handed it back. “Rub out the pencil and write the answers in ink.”
“Thanks, Dane,” he sighed. “Lifesaver, mate. Mr Lightwater would actually murder me if I forgot any more homework.”
I nodded absently and took out my phone. Amelia had texted me about going to see a film at the weekend. I thumbed back a quick ‘Yes, if possible’ and jumped into the conversation.
The bus made it to school surprisingly early – for once I wasn’t late to registration. Max smiled at me as I entered the room. I grinned back. If he were gay… but no, I couldn’t, not when I was hung up on John. I needed to sort this out once and for all.
Morning lessons passed by in a whirlwind of useless facts and scholastic drudgery. I wondered why time seemed to be speeding up at the moment. Before I knew it, it was lunchtime and I was sat in the common room, munching a Belgian waffle. As I swallowed the last bite, John sauntered in. He walked swiftly towards me, and I found myself admiring the hard contours of his thigh muscles through his trousers. Rugby kept him in good shape.
“Morning, Daney-boy,” he said pleasantly, motioning for me to stand up for a hug. I raised an eyebrow.
“Daney-boy?” We embraced as usual. He stepped back and shrugged.
“Thought I’d try it out. Yay or nay?”
“Er, nay, nay, one thousand times nay!” I laughed. John smirked.
“What are you doing this Friday? I was wondering about going to see a film…”
I started to say I’d love to go see a film, then remembered I’d already set up a date with Amelia. Well, not a date… you know what I mean.
“I would, really, but I’m going to see Hard Liners with Ames. Hey, you could tag along, if you want,” I added hopefully. Amelia wouldn’t mind. She was always trying to set me up with guys. It was funny at first, then it just got annoying.
“OK, sounds good. I was gonna suggest that one anyway,” he agreed.
“Great minds think alike,” I said with a suggestive wink. He shoved my shoulder playfully. We both sat down and he put his arm across the back of the seats, not quite around my shoulders but clearly that was his intention. I leaned my head in to his chest. We sat like that for most of lunch, just chatting idly about various things going on at school until the bell rang for afternoon registration. As I sat up to grab my bag, I noticed that the crotch of his trousers was suspiciously tight and tented. He had a hard-on! I smiled to myself. Hope blossoms…
The rest of the week passed by at superspeed. I had no more charged moments with John for a few days, but we sat together every lunch time, just quietly enjoying each other’s company. I really began to feel hopeful about him liking me too. It might have just been desperation, but it seemed that he kept dropping little hints in behaviour and speech that he might like me more than a friend.
At the end of Friday lunch time, the last time we saw each other before meeting up for the film, he gave me this strange smile, and kissed me on the cheek again. I quickly reciprocated, so as to avoid the awkwardness of the last time he kissed me, and two bright pink spots appeared on his cheekbones. I smirked cheekily at his blush, and gave him a sultry goodbye wave, looking seductively over my shoulder and biting my lip just before looking away. The smirk became a full blown grin when I looked back after a moment and saw the clear outline of his boner creeping down his leg. Oh, it was on, baby!
