                                                                          "Futurtastic"

                                                             .                      .                    .

Callie plucks the strings of her guitar, making out a soft tune and humming along.

"You're the light out on the sea, a twirling seed blown off the tree, floating in the wind, rolling on the waves, slipping out of reach. . ." she picks up the beat slowly while continuing to sing, "You're everything I need. I smell honey in your hair, I see longing in your stare, all I know is that you care. And all that I have left is only what I've built here."

Lena rubs her eyes as she groggily descends down the stairs, curious as to who is playing the guitar. She is cautious when cracking open the back patio door only to see her daughter; her mop of chestnut curls frizzed and her arms wrapped around the source of the noise that stirred Lena from her slumber.

"Break me open like the sky at the sunrise. . ." Callie pauses, trying to remember the next line. Remembrance comes to her and she smiles softly, "Hear the thunder in this quiet trembling sigh. . ."

"That's beautiful." says Lena from the doorway, the sudden compliment making Callie jump in her seat. She looks back at Lena, her eyes hardening as she stares at the older woman in slight fear.

"I'm sorry," she sputters, "I-I didn't mean to be out so late, I-I--"

"It's okay." Lena reassures her with a small smile, slowly approaching the 17-year-old and sitting in front of her, trailing her fingers over the head-stock, "Is this Brandon's old guitar?"

Callie is hesitant to nod, but she does anyways, clutching tighter to the instrument and pressing her fingers to the cold strings harder in anticipation.

"He gave it to you?"

"A long time ago." Callie whispers. Lena bites her lip.

"I see. Why don't you keep playing?"

She looks up to Lena, her eyes glimmering both with tears and a tinge of sadness, "You're sure?"

"It seems to calm you. Of course."

Callie stares at the strings in an attempt to remember the next line, since she had been thrown a bit off at Lena's sudden arrival. Once she thinks she knows the continuing sentence, she begins to strum.

"Hold on to the hand that was there, when you would stare away, as I would lay here. . ." she bites the inside of her cheek in concentration between lines, "Oh it took me by surprise when all the hunger left your eyes. . ." she switches her gaze from the strings to the ground as she uses all the willpower in her to not act on any sudden emotions.
