----Dear Diary: The Thoughts And Extracts of Mary Bennett-----

~The Affairs of Others...

Dear diary,

I awake to the strange silence that seems to saturate the empty hallways of the Bennett home. This was odd, even if Kitty and I were the only two of the five Bennett sisters who were left unmarried. Mama was usually awoken to her frivolous ranting by now, complaining to her husband, Mr. Bennett, who constantly tolerates her flippant manner. I still do not know how Papa can do this, for it is a fine art that takes years to perfect.

My two older sisters, Jane and Elizabeth, have been fortunately married off to two extremely wealthy men: Mr. Darcy, and Mr. Bingley. My youngest, and flirtatious sister, Lydia, suddenly eloped with Mr. Wickham, an officer from Meryton who gambled away most of any fortune he had. But this small fortune was recovered by the generosity of Mr. Darcy as he paid for all the debts. Now, Mr. Wickham and Lydia are newly wed, and gone.

Every one seems to have gone, even our close friend Charlotte Lucas who was wed to Mr..... Mr. Collins... I believe that Mr. Collins was my only hope in matrimony, and now that hope has been extinguished. No one else knew of my secret liking of Mr. Collins, no one except Jane and she is extremely trust worthy. Charlotte did not know... not did the man himself. I was very surprised that after Eliza's rejection of him that mama did not point him directly toward myself. But both Eliza and Mama were cross, shoving me once again into the background.

Oh well, one cannot change the sorrowful events of the past, but can prepare themselves for the future. After much pondering I have come to the melancholy conclusion that I shall never marry, and become an old maid for Mama when she becomes old and sickly, for Kitty will not do that, and who else will? I feel it to be my duty. After her death in the future, I shall think more deeply on my extracts and possibly write many volumes of ponderous thought.

Oh and there is Mama. Right on cue...

Until again,

Mary Bennett
