Chapter 5 - My Mother's Words

'Run!!!!' My mind screams as soon as I land from the little side roof.

I have no clue if she has intentions on following me or not, but the more distance I get between her and I, the better; and the safer.

"I hope you have a good life, Natalie Rose Wright!" I hear my mother scream, but she doesn't sound too close. I cautiously turn my head to see that she is yelling from the window in my bedroom. I can see the faint outline of her body, along with the very red metal knife in her hand; the parts that aren't bloody are reflecting off of the dim light.

"HE LOVED YOU!" I scream and sob back at her. "AND SO DID I! I THOUGHT WE WERE A FAMILY!."

"WELL COME BACK HERE AND THEN WE CAN BOTH JOIN YOUR FATHER! THEN WE CAN BE THAT FAMILY!" She yells and I see her moving the knife.

"NO! THAT IS NOT HOW IT WORKS! I HATE YOU!" I sob.

"Well," her voice lowers, but I can still hear her. "Then I hope you have a very damn good life, Natalie Rose Wright. I hope you have a damn better one than I ever had. But trust me, I'm sure something will happen to you as well one day. Until then, have a great life, Natalie Rose Wright."

I see the knife move and then she falls to the ground silently.

I wish I could say that I had cared more, although I did care, I just didn't care like when I saw the knife she jammed into my father's stomach by her.

I run, I don't know where to, but I run down the street and over the guard rail. I automatically run to where my father and I spent hours playing for years.

That's when the tears come.

"Princess Nat, it looks like there is land ahead! Should we dock our ship there?" Captain Dad asks.

"I think so. It looks a little scary though. It's an abandoned island, Captain Dad."

"Ah! It's an alligator! Kill it, Captain Dad!" I run over into his arms and he picks me up.

"But Princess Nat, it's not doing any harm to anyone. It isn't hurting anyone, so why kill it?" He asks.

"Because it's scary!"

"Oh Princess, he's harmless, look. He's smiling at you. Maybe he wants to be friends and help us. How about we talk to him and see what his real intentions of being here are." He says bending down and looking to an invisible alligator.

That's the thing about my father. He just never wanted to harm anything. If there was a bug or spider in the house, a cup and a piece of paper to let it outside was the only option. Mice in the basement; I'm never really sure how he did it, but it was a really big bucket and a piece of cheese. He always found an option around the easy way of a fly swatter or a mouse trap to get rid of such creatures.

Sadly, his death was the exact opposite. Unnecessary and to the benefit of no one.

I stand up, looking at the place I cherished most as a child. I know that I could stay the night here if I had wanted. I saw my mother kill herself, but even if I didn't, she never knew about this place.

I just know I can't stay because if I do I will never leave.

The police will probably be around soon enough, and they'll be looking for me; the only one that wasn't killed. They'll want information, then put my in foster care with some other family I wouldn't love and force me to carry out my life in an unwanted manor in an unwanted city in an unwanted world.

I have to go somewhere else.

I continue to head through the woods, not running, not strolling, but walking at a good speed for what must be hours on end.

I know I should stop and sleep, but I don't want to.

I don't know where I am, or where I'm going, but sleeping during that time won't help me travel any further. Plus, even if I did try to sleep, I don't think I would.

That's where I am right now, living in an unwanted town, in an unwanted city, in an unwanted world.

As I keep walking, I see my hometown of Milwaukee leave in the dust behind me.

Here's to my new life.

It sounds like a good statement, but my mother's last words to me haunt the back of my head.

They propel me to walk just a little faster.
