...

"Katalina, the King is looking for you!"

She sighed and knelt with a hand on her hip, the other wiped the sweat from her forehead. She dropped her sponge back in the bucket and rose to her feet slowly.

"Katalina!" she called again.

"I'm coming!" she yelled.

Katalina left the room, slamming the door hard behind her. She walked through the halls, making sure to check each of the windows. Life outside the palace was peaceful. Those who had not left for battle tended to the horses. They trained and cared for the horses, their happy neighing ringing through the palace walls. Life inside the palace went on as usual. Servants scurried hectically from room to room, either doing some errand for some of the other superiors or simply moving to a new room to clean. Nothing seemed much out of place except for the Prince's absence and the absences of the men who went with him. Katalina absentmindedly walked into the King's office and stood in front of him, staring out of the window behind him.

"Katalina." began the King.

"Yes, my lord?" she asked, her eyes never moving from the window.

"I saw you talking to Pierce yesterday before they left." he said.

She didn't respond.

"Katalina!" he yelled.

Her eyes shot to his attention and the king glared at her angrily.

"My lord?"

"What was someone of your caste doing speaking to a royal officer?" he demanded.

"Many pardons, my lord. I simply wished to bid he and the Prince farewell."

"And what did you give to him to deliver to the Prince?"

"A gift, my lord." she said.

"What kind of a gift?"

"A simple trinket. Nothing more." said and shifted her gaze back to the window.

The King studied her a moment. She stood there staring out of the window, slightly dazed with her hand clasped neatly behind her and her feet pressed firmly together. Her hair floated wildly about her and her calm demeanor betrayed the look of confusion that painted a portrait upon her face.

"Why did you give the Prince a trinket?" he asked.

"To give him more reason to return." she said.

The King stroked his long greying beard and leaned back against his desk.
