Chapter 4

Allison woke to the sound of Todd getting out of bed. She yawned and rubbed her eyes.

"Good morning," she said, sleep still in her voice.

"Go back to sleep," said Todd. "You're staying home today. I don't want you getting sick at work. I'm calling in to let them know."

"Okay," she said. She knew he was right. She couldn't risk it. She needed to wait until she knew her morning sickness was gone. She would need to take something to help ease it a bit. She decided that she would make herself a cup of green tea to see if that would help.

Todd kissed her good-bye after he had showered and dressed, and reminded her to take her prenatal vitamin.

She fell back asleep for about another hour or so. At 8:00 she arose from her bed.

Part of the reason she woke up was because she really had to pee. She ran to the bathroom to release the waterfall inside of her. She washed her face, enjoying the splash of warm water and patted it dry with a towel.

When she'd finished in the bathroom, she heard her stomach grumble. Time for breakfast. She would make the green tea, but she didn't know what to make to eat. She wanted something that would be easy on her stomach. She didn't want to eat eggs again because she hadn't even touched her eggs yesterday and she puked.

She looked up good breakfast foods for morning sickness. Tea with lemon; she would put lemon in her green tea, bagels with butter. No she didn't feel like having a bagel. Plus, she liked them with cream cheese, and clearly, cream cheese would not be a good thing to eat for morning sickness. Peanut butter.

"Ew," she thought. "Who eats just peanut butter?"

She didn't really like the stuff anyways.

Banana and kiwi. Weird combo, plus they didn't even have kiwi nor would she eat it if they did. And she wanted something a little more than just a banana. Scrambled eggs. Really? Those had instigated her morning sickness! The last thing on the list was oatmeal. Now that was more like it; she loved oatmeal. Well, she had a winner. Green tea with lemon and oatmeal.

She got up from her lap top and headed to the kitchen to start making her breakfast. She poured some Quaker oats and milk into a bowl and heated it up in the microwave. While that was cooking she heated up the water in the Keureg for her tea. She got out a green tea bag and placed it in a mug. Once her oatmeal was done she took it out and flavored it with some brown sugar. Then, she walked over to the Keureg with its flashing blue lights and pressed the button to pour the water into the mug. It screeched out in a thin line and grunted to a stop after it had filled the mug to the top. The tea bag began releasing its contents into the steaming water.

As much as she loved adding cream to her tea, she decided against it, thinking it would only provoke her sickness. However, she decided she would at least put a spoonful of sugar to sweeten it and cancel out at least some of the bitterness that the lemon would cause. She got a lemon out of the fridge and the canister of sugar off the counter. She sliced the lemon in half and squeezed some juice into her tea, the lemon making a sloshing squeaking noise as she squeezed it. Then, she dumped a spoonful of sugar into her tea. She stirred it up, the spoon clinking against the mug.

Then she remembered her prenatal vitamin. She swallowed the pill with some water.

Just as she was about to dig into her anti-morning sickness breakfast, her phone buzzed. She picked it up. It was Emily calling.

"Hey," she said.

"Hey Allie," said Emily. "How are you doing?"

"Good," said Allison. "Just made myself some breakfast that I hope will ease my morning sickness. I looked it up online. Tea with lemon and oatmeal."
