Chapter Three: What Did I Do?

Ash's POV

I felt guilty as hell.

I hadn't been thinking straight. I had been so mad at Ted for pushing me into the shelves. But when I saw her beautiful green eyes and luscious pink lips, I was literally speechless. She kept asking questions, probably seeing if I was okay.

And I was the one that ran into her.

She looked like an Angel on earth. Midnight black hair tumbled down her shoulders. Her eyebrows were scrunched up from worry, a wrinkly line forming between them.

She probably thought I was a pervert.

I mean, who randomly kissed someone in a grocery store? Me, apparently. I had to do something to get Brittany off her back. As soon as I heard how Brittany was talking to her, I jumped right in. But she looked like she didn't mind me saying anything, though.

At least for a few seconds anyway.

Her dad swooped in like a hawk. He could have been a pterodactyl, coming back from extinction. When he pushed her down, I knew something wasn't right. And that Cassidy wasn't just any girl, either.

People end up differently when you have to deal with that. I couldn't even say it. I already knew she didn't have a normal childhood.

Like me. I knew the look. I knew the feeling. I understood.

By the way he looked at her, it seemed like he thought the same about her as did Brittany. And apparently the whole school.

I immediately tried to take up for her and make it right. The panic on her face said everything. But when she took up for me, I couldn't believe my ears. Why would she do that? Her dad's cruel face and malicious smile of triumph crawled over my skin. He looked elated the moment the words came out of her mouth.

Like he had another excuse to beat her.

As soon as she left the store, I knew I had to fix it. I couldn't sleep at night knowing I was the cause of someone's suffering. I watched them walk across the parking lot, his filthy hand still latched onto her arm. I shoved two one-hundred dollar bills into the hands of the nearest attendee, shock on his face.

"Pick that up for me? I gotta be somewhere."

"Yeah, for two hundred bucks? Are you kid-"

By the time he had finished talking, I was already out the door, sprinting in the rain to my car. But then I realized....I came here with Ted.

And he left already.

"DAMN IT!" I screamed to the sky in frustration.

The one time I tried to make up for all the things I'd done in this world and I didn't have any damn transportation. The rain pelted my clothes, forming a big puddle. I watched as the Hummer pulled out of the parking lot, a feeling of failure weighing me down.

Out of the corner of my eye I saw a guy heading towards a hot pink motorcycle.

Snazzy.

But I didn't care what it looked like as long as it worked, so I jogged over to him.

"Hey, man. I'm in a tight situation here. Think I could borrow that bike? I'll bring it back in the next half hour. It's an emergency."

His eyes went wide. I guess I would seem pretty sketchy to another person. I held up a $500 dollar bill, and his facial expression morphed into one of greed.

"Toss in another one of those goodies you got there, and you can keep it for a whole hour," he bribed.

I pulled another one from my wallet, and slapped the two bills into his hand. I didn't have time for wheeling-and-dealing. He passed me the helmet, and I jumped onto the bike and revved it.
